OC Register: Angels retain top scouts they had once planned to furlough

Recommended Posts

The Angels reversed course and opted against furloughing nine of their top scouts, a source confirmed on Wednesday.

With the coronavirus pandemic impacting the Angels finances and Major League Baseball having a ban on in-person scouting, the Angels had decided last month to furlough almost the entire amateur scouting department.

Most of the scouts went off the clock on June 1 and nine cross checkers were scheduled to stop working on Tuesday, just after last week’s draft.

However, Major League Baseball just lifted its ban on in-person scouting, giving the Angels reason to retain at least their upper level scouts.

The Angels are scouting Perfect Game National, a major showcase that began on Wednesday in Alabama. It essentially marks the beginning of the scouting period for the 2021 draft.

The Angels had four picks in last Wednesday’s five-round draft, having surrendered one because of signing free agent Anthony Rendon last December.

With the draft condensed, hundreds of top amateur players went unselected and became available to sign with any team for a maximum of $20,000.

So far the Angels have not signed any of those players. Having more scouts working could help in those efforts.
