Angels select Louisville LHP Reid Detmers 10th overall

Very smart pick. This guy will be a solid, professional pitcher. Barring injuries and with proper development and experience he could be long time Angel.

Don't panic over basically average velocity. It's good enough when mixed in with his other pitches. To have mastered the curve already is a big plus. Of course he has to learn all about major league hitters, but he has the tools and seeming maturity to be a quality prospect.

Probably the best pro ready pitcher of the draft if everything unfolds ideally.

Looks like In the past, Detmers has retweeted Charlie Kirk and retweeted at least 2 anti-Hillary Clinton tweets, so I imagine he'll be popular here.

Nothing too controversial that I saw.

I love the pick even more now!

I also noticed that a Carson Tucker was drafted. LMAO

I think the big difference is where his fastball is sitting. 90-94 is plenty of a speed difference with a curve like that especially coming from a lefty. Fastball at 90-94 with arm-side run, borderline plus-changeup in the 80's and a plus-curve is honestly a pretty complete repertoire.

I also heard that since he hides the ball really well in his delivery his fastball at 91-92 looks more like a mid 90's heater. Kind of like Jered Weaver's FB early on that jumped on hitters, even though he was in the low 90's.

Don't like the pick at all.  That slurvy balloon curveball can fool a lot of college hitters, but major league hitters...

the dude was rated a top 10 pick and the angels took a starting left handed pitcher at the 10 spot in a draft that didn't have any standouts this year. i have no problem with any team going SLHP.  it's a perfectly good pick and maybe better than that. it's hard to chart makeup.

Joe Saunders but with a better breaking ball. Important to keep in mind, Saunders was actually a pretty solid #3-4 starter for a while there.

Detmer should be a solid #3-4 starter and more importantly, should be ready midway through 2021. This isn't someone to stay on for 2023 and beyond. He's a bit more tangible than that, which is what the system needs.

There's "best player available" vs addressing team needs. Detmer is definitely the latter without sacrificing too much of the former.

Exactly what the team needs.

How is Jose Quintana for a comp? Both are southpaws having a FB/CV/CH in their repertoires with a fastball sitting in the low 90's and I think Detmers has the superior secondary pitches (he definitely has the superior curve). Quintana stands at 6'1, 220 pounds while Detmers at 6'2, 210 pounds (could Detmers add an extra tick on his fastball if there's room for a few extra pounds in his frame?). Quintana has arguably been at least a solid #3 pitcher his entire career with a few #2 seasons sprinkled in. If Detmers is anything similar to Quintana, I think we hit the jackpot.

Bahah! I heard that too! I laughed pretty hard at the comparison. Hopefully that doesn't happen!

I laughed because Hultzen coming out of college didn't throw a curve, his bender was a slider and his out pitch was a change-up -- he was also touching 97 and working 93-94  when the hype train was going.

But they are both white guys that throw left handed so...  TOTALLY the same.
