Universal DH Happening

Fans of the DH are most likely small brained. They don't see the strategy that a 9-hole pitcher creates--but you ninnies only want to watch hits, HRs, and gripe about baseball being too boring. Baseball is a game of strategy, if you want action go watch football and drink some natty ice you pieces of shits

This is a long time coming. There should be zero reason that just because Angels play in Anaheim and Dodgers play in LA that the rules should be different. This is the only sport that had two different set of rules. Either keep the DH out of baseball altogether or make it universal were the only two options. Making the DH universal is much more fun for the fans and at the end of the day it's about entertainment. Double switches and watching a pitcher hit in the 3rd inning isn't fun. Win win for baseball. Probably way too late, but it's a move in the right direction for the fan experience.

Whoever still thinks that having an automatic out in the lineup is good for an already slow burn game that is dying.... you are one of the biggest problems on why baseball is dying.

Nope, its youth sports that's killing it (not to mention video games).  Every kid now needs two triple-walled bats (they look like deadpool when they carry it around in their backpack), their own helmet, two batting gloves, shoes, backpack to carry it all, AND AN ADULT TO TELL THEM WHAT TO DO!!!  When's the last time you saw a pickup game in your area?  Kids nowadays don't even know that "over-the-line" is. Inner city kids are priced out.

Back in the '60s and '70s we had 4 helmets for the team, about a dozen baseballs for the season (we kept one "game ball" for the whole season), nobody had their own bat, and only the rich-spoiled brat kid had a batting glove (we were all jealous of it).  I rode to the park with my shoes and glove slung over the handlebars.  We usually had only about one or two parents in the stands (usually a couple of dads who'd been drinking and loved to harass the ump).  The coach was the guy who drew the short straw.  It was like Adam Carolla says, "Who do you want taking your kids camping?  The guy who immediately raises his hand?  No!!!  The guy who is trying to sneak out the back door....that's who you want taking your kids camping!!! (in our case, that was the guy who had to coach little league)"

However, after our little league game, we would play pickup games, (over the line if not enough players) until dark, and, I would argue, we developed our skills just through shear repetition and had WAAAY more fun.

The same is happening in basketball.  Summer camps used to be for skill development.  Now they are for playing games.  When your kid is on a team of twelve, just what percent of the time does he/she have the ball in their hands?

Just wanted to go on record that I'm a fan of the league-wide DH. I'll leave now.

Although, I was waiting for the day to see Ohtani pitching and hitting cleanup (as a pitcher) in the same day. That could still happen right? He pitches, we forfeit the DH, but he hits. Then we don't have a DH the rest of the game after he gets pulled? I forget how that works, maybe someone could clarify.

It's a disadvantage. Ohtani can hit and pitch at the same time, but then the relief pitchers have to bat once he leaves the game.

The DH position is just like having a place for mom.

what they should do is let a player PH for the pitcher but if that player doesn't stay in the game, then the pitcher can.  If the pitcher stays in then the player who hit for him doesn't get to hit again and is done for the game.

so two out and no one on?  don't waste a hitter.  two on and no one out in the fifth?  use a hitter but maybe let the pitcher come back out.  scoring situation in the 7th?  double switch but you can still PH for whatever pitcher you bring in later and let them come back out.

the pitcher hitting is stupid but I agree that the strategy keeps the game a little more interesting.  This solves both for the most part.

with one on and one out in the 6th, do you sacrifice or potentially waste a pinch hitter?

maybe expand rosters to 27 but limit the number of pitchers you can have at any given time.  good hitting pitchers become more valuable.

the DH isn't all that interesting.  the pitcher hitting is stupid.  How about somewhere in the middle.  you could even get a little weird and limit the number of at bats for a DH.

I always preferred DH across the board. When the pitcher goes to the plate is a bathroom break and automatic out.....just boring as shit.

When I look at memorable or exciting games, it's not 2-1, but rather 10-9 and you're not going to get that with the pitcher swinging the bat. The game is already favored towards the pitcher and the hardest thing in sports is to hit a baseball. Give a better opportunity to make games more exciting.

Is strategy boring? Elimination of the pitcher at bat makes the game more robotic and less interesting.

The pitcher at bat makes managerial decisions much more interesting. Especially in close games. Keep a pitcher in who is doing well, but down a run when his turn to bat comes up? Pinch hit, double switch, try and  sacrifice if runners are on base with less than two out? Risk losing a great pitching performance by bringing in a mediocre reliever?

And having a pitcher at bat also makes pinch hitting more important. Teams with good pinch hitters are at an advantage in clutch situations and likely to pull the pitcher quicker than those without a deep bench.

I prefer strategy rather than brain dead slugging. Often by fat, old players who aren't athletic enough to play on the field. The DH is almost like a field goal kicker in football. A specialist with just one skill.

I know I've been pushing for that on here for years and sadly it doesn't seem like a popular idea. I've never been a fan of pitchers batting, but they are like the vegetables of the game - they create a balance on the field between pitching, defense, speed and power. Without them lineups get stacked with power hitters, and benches are filled with power arms in the bullpen. I know some people prefer that but I enjoy the nuance of strategy, of speed vs strength, or defense vs power.

The dual substitution rule allows teams to limit pitcher at bats, have the same rules in both leagues, eliminate the DH, increase strategy, increase the value of bench players and their versatility and reduce the number of arms in the bullpen. It's a solid compromise between different factions of baseball fandom and something that creates a better product.
