OC Register: Dodgers, MLB still celebrate Jackie Robinson Day without games

Recommended Posts

The Covid-19 pandemic that shut down Major League Baseball altered, but did not stop, the sport’s annual celebration of Jackie Robinson.

MLB used its digital platforms to honor Robinson on Wednesday, the anniversary of the day that he integrated the sport with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947.

Normally, the event is marked by every player in the majors wearing Robinson’s No. 42 in games. Even without games this year, players for the Dodgers, Angels and other major league teams still had their numbers changed to 42 on the roster pages of MLB’s official web site on Wednesday.

The Dodgers planned for manager Dave Roberts and Mookie Betts to speak about Robinson’s impact in a Zoom chat to be shared online on Wednesday night.

They also planned to post clips of player interviews from spring training about Robinson on their social network channels throughout the day.

The Dodgers changed their profile photo to the No. 42 on their Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts.

A few Dodgers players also tweeted messages honoring Robinson.

“Happy Jackie Robinson day!,” David Price posted on his Twitter account. “Eternally grateful for Mr. Robinson! I have been looking forward to this day since being traded to LA. Can’t wait to get back to doing what we love! In the meantime let’s just stay home and stay safe.”

Michael Hermosillo, one of four African-Americans on the Angels’ major league roster, posted “Thank you! #JackieRobinsonDay,” with a photo of Robinson, on his Twitter account.

Angels’ top prospect Jo Adell tweeted: “Couldn’t imagine a life without being able to pursue my dream because of the color of my skin. Thank you, Jackie. Today is for you!!!”

MLB Network and MLB.com planned a full day of Robinson-related broadcasts, streaming and on television. Among the games replayed was the Dodgers-New York Mets game on April 15, 1997, when Robinson’s number was officially retired across the majors.

The World Series film from 1955, a Brooklyn Dodgers victory featuring Robinson, was streamed on MLB’s Facebook, Twitter and YouTube outlets.
