Judging a hitter's statistics vs. a pitcher's statistics?

Recommended Posts

Judging a hitter's statistics is more common than judging a pitcher's statistics. Way more common. One example would be Trout's 2014 campaign. Trout had an OPS+ of 168 that season with an OBP of .377 and OPS of .939. If any starting pitcher's ERA was 68% better than the league average, no one would dare to downgrade his season. But for a hitter? Yeah. Because of a stupid stat like batting average. If a hitter's OPS was the equivalent to a pitcher's ERA, no one would have nit pick Trout's 2014 season and try to downgrade his accomplish that season by saying," But he only batted .287." Yeah, in the hardest hitting season since 1968. Aaron Judge had the same issue a few years back during his phenominal rookie season. Let me guess, he lost the AL MVP to Altuve based on some stupid stat like batting average. And for Pujols? He'll probably end his Major League career with batting average under .300. Some people will nit pick on that and say that Pujols doesn't belong in the top-10 hitters of all time list in Major League history or something like that.

Pujols does not belong in the top 10  hitters of all time. Eight years ago he was on pace, but his overall numbers are plummetted.

The best for overall hitting, in my opinion, is wRC+. The top 10 are:

  1. Babe Ruth 197
  2. Ted Williams 188
  3. Lou Gehrig 173
  4. Rogers Hornsby 173
  5. Barry Bonds 173
  6. Mike Trout 172
  7. Mickey Mantle 170
  8. Ty Cobb 165
  9. Joe Jackson 165
  10. Stan Musial/Jimmie Foxx 158

Pujols is not even in the top 40. With 144, he's tied for 43rd with Eddie Collins, Harry Heilmann, Ed Delahanty, Nap Lajoie, and Lance Berkman.

True that he doesn't belong in the top ten but I also think his contract prevented him from accepting his productive years were done and let the market decide if his career would continue. I think his career would be looked upon more favorably if his contract would have been yearly and not renewed when he fell off so much in 2017.
