COVID-19 Cancellations

Recommended Posts

I just got the noitification that NAB (National Alliance of Broadcsters) have cancelled this years convention in Las Vegas where all of the vendors assemble with demonstrations of new hardware, software and workflows. This is a big event and now scraped from the calendar and no word of a reschedule.

That is a lot of money not flowing into the strip and we can be looking at layoffs in sin city. As we've read in the news public gatherings are being curtailed or even cancelled outright. This is going to work it's way through all sorts of service industries.

Post here what you are going to miss because your event was rescheduled or permanently cancelled.

This Friday is the first night of shooting of The Bachelorette. If just one person shows up, whether it be cast or crew, with a virus that may just be the cancellation of the entire season. If they survive the first 4 weeks without incident they have travel out of town and out of country for contestants and crew. During the shoots we send people back and forth to bring back media. Once production is completed, many of those production people come back home to work in the office.

All of the show media is on servers that are loaded by assists that also manage the media and projects throughtout the process for 18 editors and 12 Executive and Co-Executive producers. There are 8 or more loggers full time that work on other jobs at other facilities. There are dozens of story producers and writers but they can work remotely if necessary. The number of people that interact on this show in the office counts in the hundreds.

I can only work from home remotely when I have uprezed media and I have to go into the office to retrieve it or have a runner sent to the house with drives. We still have to view the show and work on notes which is always 5 or more people in my room for 3-4 hours.

This could get ugly quick and I may just have no choice about taking the summer off.

Coachella and Stagecoach both got postponed until October. I would never pay to go to either festival, but I wanted to make sure @m0nkey heard the news.

I have a family member that has tickets.

She got her postponement email yesterday.

October would be cooler temps so maybe it will end up being a good thing.

@Blarg  I think NAB is the 3rd or 4th biggest convention of the year for Vegas.  So there is definitely going to be a ripple effect throughout the Vegas industry.  Overall though, I think it'll be good for me, because all it will mean is casinos will be offering more comps to lure people in.

Also just got an email from Santa Anita Park.  They say business as usual.  And if you ever have been to the track, that is ripe for a disease to run through it.  So if Covid doesn't start rampant there, then it won't start rampant anywhere.

If a horse dies, and no one is there to see it, is it really dead?

some event I had to go to at the Trump Doral has been cancelled

That was about $1000 in hotel fees just for me for a handful of days, and this is a convention with a couple thousand people, and presumably just one of many conventions......

Id guess the revenue losses for these kinds of hotels is going to be massive, and to think how many institutional funds (pensions, etc) invest in hotels is a bit scary

So In N Out had to cancel our annual charity golf tournament that was scheduled for this coming Friday down at Torrey Pines.

The average charity golf tournament raises about $30k, a good one raises about $60k.  Last year our one day golf tournament raised $1.7 million.

Having to cancel this has weighed very heavy on all of us since the money does so much good for children’s homes in around the communities we do business in.  It is our single biggest event every year.  Most of us donate our time to give a level of customer service to the golfers that is next level for such an event.  Looks like I will be bidding on some silent auction items that we will still auction off online.

Truly a sad day.
