OC Register: Angels tie Diamondbacks with a run in the ninth

Recommended Posts

THE GAME: The Angels scored the tying run on a two-out error in the ninth inning to pull out a 6-6 tie against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday at Tempe Diablo Stadium.

PITCHING REPORT: RHP Julio Teheran gave up three runs in three innings in his second start of the spring. Teheran gave up a two-run homer in the first inning to Kevin Cron, the younger brother of former Angel C.J. Cron. In the third inning, Teheran walked three hitters and gave up a bloop single, but he escaped with just one run scoring. “The damage was done, but with the bases loaded and two outs, I kind of limited the damage there and that’s something good we can take into the season,” Teheran said.… LHP Patrick Sandoval gave up two runs in three innings. Sandoval, who pitched two scoreless innings in his other spring training game, is in the running for one of the final two rotation spots… LHP Jose Quijada gave up a tie-breaking homer in the ninth inning. He had not allowed a run in any of his first three spring outings.

HITTING REPORT: Anthony Bemboom hit his first homer of the spring. Bemboom is the leading candidate to break camp as the Angels’ No. 2 catcher if Max Stassi isn’t ready. Stassi, who had offseason hip surgery, is expecting to be ready… Jo Adell went 1 for 3. Adell is 7 for 22 with 11 strikeouts this spring… Tommy La Stella was 1 for 3 with an RBI. La Stella had not played a game since Tuesday, having missed a game with a stiff back… Taylor Ward doubled off the top of the center-field fence… Arismendy Alcantara reached on a bunt single and a bloop single. Alcantara, who is 8 for 19 this spring, is likely ticketed for Triple-A as middle infield depth… Jordyn Adams, generally considered the Angels’ No. 3 prospect, was hitless in two at-bats. After he drew a walk, he was picked off. He is now 1 for 15 in big-league exhibitions, even though he’s not in big-league camp… Gareth Morgan, up from minor-league camp, hit a game-tying two-run homer in the eighth inning. It was his first homer of the spring.

DEFENSE REPORT: RF Adell made a nice catch heading into the gap in right center field.

UP NEXT: Angels (RHP JC Ramirez) vs. Cincinnati Reds (RHP Trevor Bauer), Goodyear Ballpark, 1 p.m. PT Sunday; Angels (RHP Matt Andriese) vs. Milwaukee Brewers (RHP Shelby Miller), American Family Fields, 1 p.m. PT Sunday.

I am fascinated a bit with Morgan.

Ettin, Morgan is an all or nothing type hitter. The power is legitimate, but he strikes out a ton. And, as he faces higher level pitching, he will be even more exposed. I would love to see him improve, but his numbers are unsustainable.
