The free agent shortstop class of 2021

There’s been a lot of hype for awhile about all of the elite SSs hitting the market in 2021.  Seager, Story, Baez, Lindor, and Correa will all be free agents.  Do you think the Angels will be in on these names?  Do you want them to be?

Correa's back troubles may well be chronic.    Being a SS at 6-4 can't help matters any.    Seager has some health concerns as well, plus also being 6-4 and playing SS.

Lindor and Story will get at the least Rendon money.

Baez isn't a FA until after the 2021 season.

Just go with either Simba or Rengifo, per Kevinb's post.

All of the players I listed are.

Defensively most of them are not good. Additionally there is a strong possibility that at least a couple of them are signed to extension contracts. Out of those names the only ones I see Eppler truly targeting are Lindor or Baez (outside chance at Story), for their defensive capabilities (the others are offensive-first SS's).

Lindor is likely to be traded between now and the Trade Deadline 2021. If he is traded before the 2021 season there is a good chance that the acquiring team will attempt to extend him.

Baez has already been in discussions with the Cubs about an extension and I think that is just a matter of time before that deal takes place.

Story will likely be traded too and may get locked up as well with whomever acquires him.

So, the odds are not really in our favor to acquire a defensively-capable SS, so we are probably better off extending Simmons for another 4 years and let Arol Vera, Jeremiah Jackson, and Kyren Paris develop into our SS of the future.

Then again I talked about all of this already:

:D

Doubtful. We have Simmons and Rengifo

Do we for sure though? Simmons hits FA and Rengifo seemingly was the main youngster discussed in Kluber and Stripling/Pederson deals, so he may be our go-to trade bait this summer if we pursue an arm.

I think it's Rengifo going forward unless they have to package him for a ace pitcher type and if so then they extend Simmons till some of the younger kids are ready and show progress.

Here's how I'd play it out:

1. Simmons returns close to peak form. Offer him a 3-4 year extension, something like 3/$54 or 4/$60M. If he accepts...

1a. Simmons at SS, Fletcher at 2B, Rengifo as UT. Or, Jones at 2B, Fletcher as super UT, Rengifo traded.

2. Simmons doesn't return to form, but still decent. Offer him a one-year contract to see if he can bounce-back.

2a. If he doesn't take the deal, say buh-bye. Rengifo at SS, Fletcher at 2B, Jones as UT.

2b. If he takes the deal, go back to 1a.

3. Simmons is bad. Let him go at the end of the year, or possible trade at deadline. Give him a QO, as someone will pick him up hoping he resuscitates.

3a. If he takes the QO, go back to 1a, but give Rengifo more playing time.

3b. If he  doesn't take the QO, go to 2a.
