THE GAME: The Angels lost 1-0 to the San Diego Padres on Thursday afternoon in Tempe, Ariz., despite using all of their everyday players.

PITCHING REPORT: Right-hander Matt Andriese worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the first and then pitched a perfect second, finishing off the fifth straight scoreless outing for an Angels starter in five games this spring. Each pitched two innings. Andriese is in the running for a spot in the Angels’ rotation, although he’ll probably pitch out of the bullpen if he doesn’t crack the rotation. … JC Ramirez gave up one run in two innings, striking out three. Ramirez’s fastball was only 91-92 mph, touching 93 once. It’s about the velocity he had immediately after returning from Tommy John surgery last year. The Angels released him last year, and they re-signed him last week after his velocity had improved over the winter. After the game, Manager Joe Maddon said the Angels are going to stretch Ramirez out to try him as a starter. … Left-hander Ryan Buchter pitched a scoreless inning. He retired three of the four right-handed hitters and gave up a single to the only lefty he faced. Buchter had been used as a lefty specialist, but with the new three-batter rule he will need to improve against righties to make the team.

HITTING REPORT: For the first time this spring, the Angels used a lineup with nine players who are expected to be on the Opening Day roster. … Shohei Ohtani struck out twice and walked. … Mike Trout singled and struck out in two trips. … Albert Pujols had a double and a groundout. … The Angels managed only four hits in the game.

DEFENSE REPORT: Right fielder Brian Goodwin made a diving catch in the second inning. … Catcher Jason Castro threw out a runner trying to steal second.

UP NEXT: Angels (LHP Andrew Heaney) vs. Texas Rangers (RHP Lance Lynn), Friday, noon, Tempe, Ariz.
