OC Register: Anthony Rendon has 2 hits in his Angels spring training debut

Recommended Posts

THE GAME: With almost all of their regulars playing for the first time this spring and everyone wearing Orange Coast College caps to honor former OCC baseball coach John Altobelli who died, along with his wife and daughter, and six others in the Kobe Bryant helicopter crash last month, the Angels beat the Cincinnati Reds 7-3 on Tuesday afternoon in Tempe, Ariz. Anthony Rendon had hits in each of his first two spring training at-bats with his new team. He had a single to left and one to right.

PITCHING REPORT: Right-hander Dylan Bundy pitched two scoreless innings, with four strikeouts. Bundy gave up a leadoff walk and then struck out the next three in the second inning. … Left-hander Jose Suarez pitched two scoreless innings, working around a hit and a walk in his first inning. “This kid here, once he really gets his major league confidence going on and he knows he can do this, he can be really good,” Manager Joe Maddon said. … The Angels’ starters in their three games so far have combined for six scoreless innings. Suarez is also a starter candidate, even though he pitched second on Tuesday. … Right-hander Keynan Middleton allowed a solo homer in one inning. … Right-hander Noé Ramirez pitched a scoreless inning, with three strikeouts and a walk. … Right-hander Cam Bedrosian gave up a homer in one inning. … Left-hander Jose Quijada pitched a perfect inning.

HITTING REPORT: The Angels scored two runs in each of the first three innings, while the regulars were playing. In the first inning, Mike Trout (walk), Rendon (hit) and Shohei Ohtani (hit by pitch) all reached to load the bases. Albert Pujols then drove in two with a single. “Up and down the batting order the at-bats all day were very good,” Maddon said. “The varsity looked really good. They set a great tone and you’re going to see a lot of that during the season.” … Trout just missed a homer in his second trip, with the wind knocking down his drive at the warning track. “I hit that ball good,” Trout said. “A good spring training out.” … Ohtani came out using a modified version of the leg kick he had in his first spring training, in 2018. He abandoned the leg kick just before the start of his rookie season, but now he’s experimenting with a lesser version of the leg kick. “I still need to try both, with and without the leg kick, just try to test each one,” Ohtani said through his interpreter. … Justin Upton had a walk in his two trips in his spring debut. … Taylor Ward homered and tripled, although his triple was a wind-blown pop-up that dropped down the right field line. He drove in three runs.

UP NEXT: Angels (RHP Julio Teheran) vs. Dodgers (RHP Josiah Gray), Tuesday, noon PT, Glendale, Ariz.
