OC Register: Angels deal for Joc Pederson and Ross Stripling reportedly falls through

After the Angels waited for days on the drama surrounding the Dodgers’ pursuit of Mookie Betts, the deal they believed they had struck is apparently not going to happen.

The Angels had reportedly agreed to get slugging outfielder Joc Pederson and starter Ross Stripling from the Dodgers after both players were rendered surplus once the Dodgers got Betts and David Price from the Boston Red Sox.

However, amid reports of the Dodgers getting Betts and Price in a reconfigured deal on Sunday, there were multiple reports that the Dodgers were no longer trading Pederson and Stripling to the Angels.

It was unclear exactly what went wrong.

The Dodgers are expected to exceed the luxury tax threshold if they keep Pederson, who will make $7.75 million after losing his arbitration case. Stripling was set to make $2.1 million.

They have no apparent place for Pederson to play with an outfield of Betts, Cody Bellinger and A.J. Pollack. Stripling had become more of a swingman than a starter in the Dodgers stacked rotation.

While that all pointed to the deal still making sense for the Dodgers, there was one theory floated that Angels owner Arte Moreno was frustrated by the delay and pulled the deal.

After the stunning reversal, the Angels were back to where things stood a week ago, with Brian Goodwin as their right fielder until highly regarded prospect Jo Adell is ready.

Their rotation depth chart still includes Dylan Bundy, Griffin Canning, Andrew Heaney, Shohei Ohtani and Julio Teheran, with a secondary group including Jaime Barría, Dillon Peters, Felix Peña, Patrick Sandoval and José Suarez.

The Angels had been set to trade infielder Luís Rengifo, who now has no apparent spot with the addition of Anthony Rendon to the infield. They were also reportedly going to acquire outfield prospect Andy Pages. At least one other prospect was expected to go to the Dodgers in the reported agreement.

More to come on this story.

Don't the Dodgers have to make a move to fit Betts and Price onto the 40 man roster before the trade is officially completed?

If the Angels pulled out of the deal after the agreement this could kind of F over the Dodgers, forcing them to DFA someone they didn't want to lose.

Maybe they'll DFA Stripling

Well Maeda was one.

This is going to hurt. Stripling and Pederson changes the dynamics. Rengifo’s value is going to fall.

I’m not sure Rengifo’s value was ever that great, at least among the 28 other teams besides the Dodgers....they needed to make the deal to move Pederson....

That what I though. this could make the Dodgers be in a dire situation.

They need to make room, teams know that. Maybe they'll try to force the Dodgers now?

If the Angels offer a couple of guys not on the 40 man roster, but with a lot of upside a deal could still be made.  Or maybe its Rengifo and a couple of younger guys and the Angels take back three 40 man roster guys from the dodgers.

Didn't catch that, so it's two moves.

Do you know the timing? Tomorrow?

Maybe Stripling and Pederson are still coming our way...

If we did this to force the Dodgers hand, they will almost certainly NOT do business with us but only with the other 28 teams in baseball.

Well bottom line is the Angels were willing to absorb those contracts.  The Dodgers currently have 42 guys on their 40 man roster, so they have to trade two guys.  They can’t trade those guys and acquire guys that have to be put on the 40 man roster.  So we aren’t forcing their hand, we are offering a trade that works for them.  They are the ones with the talent and they are also the ones with the problem.  There really is no other way to look at it.  They can’t make the Betts deal official until they move two guys off the roster.
