RIP Jim Lehrer

Co-founder of the PBS News Hour with Robert MacNeil, died today at the age of 85.

He was also a Marine infantry officer in his younger days, author of numerous fiction and non-fiction books, and a presidential debate moderator.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, three children, and grandchildren.

Saw this today. The guy was a fine news anchor, very respected by those in the profession. Always had time for young journalists.

A fine journalist and writer, yes. But as happens so often in life, his career got a jump start during an extraordinary, unforeseen event. He, along with Peter Jennings and Bob Schieffer, covered the JFK assassination in Dallas and came to national attention during those days. Schieffer was able to arrange an interview with Oswald's mother, even giving her a ride to the police station to see her son.
