A 65-year-old resident of Santa Clara County, Calif., who has no known history of travel to countries hit hard by the outbreak, has tested positive for coronavirus, people familiar with the case said Friday.

There is no known connection between the new patient and anyone else diagnosed with the disease, known as covid-19. On Wednesday, health authorities revealed the nation’s first case of community transmission, a woman in Solano County, about 90 miles away.

That means the virus appears to be spreading among at least two separate populations, according to people who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the information has not been released publicly.

Cotton calls China travel ban 'the single most consequential and valuable thing' done to slow coronavirus

“The single most consequential and valuable thing done to stop this virus from already spreading throughout the United States was when President Trump decided to shut down travel to China last month,” Cotton said, referring to the administration's announcement Jan. 31 that it would temporarily bar foreigners from entering the U.S. if they had been to China within the previous 14 days.

Cotton said that though former Vice President Joe Biden accused Trump of xenophobia and The Washington Post said that Trump overreacted, “the so-called experts who opposed the decision at the time” eventually admitted that it “bought valuable time to prevent the spread of this virus in the United States.”

Cotton said that as a result of Trump banning travel from China, the administration was able to stock drugs and medical equipment, work on vaccines and therapeutics, and “getting testing kits out to the front line.”

good press conference...sober words but emphasizing the need not to panic.

Don't travel to affected areas to begin with. Then of course the other means to lower the risk of spreading the disease.

Anticipate more cases, but the current risk to the American people remains low.

Some perspective:

Coronavirus, 22 U.S. cases, 1 dead, 4 seriously ill. Woman who died had preexisting serious health conditions.

Regular flu, 32 million cases, 18,000 flu deaths

(CDC data as of February 29th)

I’m hearing rumors that on his first day in the White House, president Tom Steyer is going to sign an executive order outlawing this virus.

Sounds like something that Trump would do, and declare the problem solved.

People are freaking out about this. There are no cases in Nevada, still our Medical Director felt compelled to hold a telephone conference on Thursday to brief wardens. I had to participate in case any of them had questions. About all that came out of it is that we are buying enough digital thermometers so that we can spot check temperatures during pill pass, since a significantly elevated temperature is one of the early signs. Otherwise, preventing its spread is pretty much like preventing any other virus: frequent hand washing, sanitize environmental surfaces, mask for anyone with a persistent cough or sneezing, isolate those who exhibit symptoms until they subside, treat symptoms.

Years ago, the warden at the facility where I worked was similarly losing it over Ebola. She was insistent that I draft a policy covering Ebola. I told her no, that our policies are not disease-specific, and that our infection control measures are sufficient.
