Would you rather overpay in trade assets or in free agent money/term for a frontline starter?

I was always a trade Marsh over trading Adell guy, but it appears the Angels don't really want to trade either guy, or even Matt Thaiss.

Rengifo isn't going to bring back a big arm, and Adams value will be higher in the summer than now, while I think they may still try to get a starter, they really like these guys so I doubt they move them. The WIlson/Cozart trade was all about making room in the budget for Rendon and a top arm, but no one signed, so now we look at the options, decide they are too expensive in terms of future cost, (prospects), and try to win with what they have.

This

Even if Trout, Adell, and Marsh is the starting OF at least into the beginning of the second half of the 2020s, you still hold on to Adams just in case and see how he develops.   He's seemingly got a great work ethic, and crazy physical tools.

Adell plus one (Rengifo, Canning, Sandoval, etc).

I think people don’t appreciate the value of 3 years control.

Here’s some homework: make a list of every above average major leaguer who has been traded with 3 years of control in the past 5 years.

Ok, here is a list of every above average major leaguer who has been traded with 3 years of control in the past 5 years:

Robinson Cano/Edwin Diaz to SEA, Jean Segura to PHI, Tommy Pham to TB, Chris Archer to PIT, Roberto Osuna to HOU, Brad Hand to CLE, and Christian Yelich to MIL, Giancarlo Stanton to NYY, Adam Eaton to WSH (at the time he was above average), Chris Sale to BOS, and Jean Segura to SEA, Ken Giles to HOU, Kimbrel to BOS, Simmons to LAA, Kimbrel to SD, Hamels to TEX, and Troy Tulowitzki to TOR.

Here are some other players that may also fit into that category: Jose Martinez to TB, Omar Narvaez to MIL, Franmil Reyes to CLE, Zac Gallen to ARI, Nick Anderson to TB, Yandy Diaz to TB, , Ryan Pressly to HOU, Steven Souza Jr to ARI (at the time he was somewhat above average).

That’s a pretty short list.

I’m going to say pretty much all those guys either had bad contracts or were traded by teams that weren’t trying to win.

Matthew Boyd would fit on the list. Mike Clevinger wouldn’t.

The true workhorses of baseball are evaporated. Gone are the days of the Fernando Valbuena’s. The true game of baseball has changed so much it’s hardly worth the price of admission. Now for your ticket you get an opener, then 4 to 5 innings of a starter with a pitch count. Most of the pitching records will never be broken. I miss the days when starters took pride in complete games.

The reason true workhorse are gone is because of your example, Fernando.  Dude was shit at age 30.

To be fair, @rendzone said Valbuena. He was a beast in the Mexican Leagues. Youre talking about Valenzuela, @Stradling
