What am I missing here? Maldonado still had a putrid slash line in his full year with the Angels in 2017 as well. It was .225/.276/.368. In 2018, between two teams he slashed .225/.276/.351. Putrid again

That's a .644 OPS and .627 OPS in 2017 and 2018. Putrid. Maldonado had a hot start with the bat with the Angels, nothing more. He still ended up being a trash hitter and will always be a trash hitter. In my opinion, Maldonado was not better offensively with us. He just caught in more games than he ever had before, which helped his counting stats and our defense, since he was really good defensively. People will probably argue that he didn't hit as well because he caught more games, and I would disagree with that based on his career numbers before he came to the Angels.

Too add, I don't think Stassi will ever even be an average hitter in the major leagues. Not trying to be pessimistic, but I just think he's a horrific hitter, as I think Maldonado is as well.

Maybe he's hinting at the fact many Angels fans wanted Maldonado back while simultaneously acting like the addition of Stassi was some sort of low point in Angels history.   They are basically the same guy... a glove first, pitch framing specialist, with a nonexistent offensive profile.

Maybe.. From reading posts on here, it seemed that many people thought Maldonado was a better with the bat here than he was before him came, and yea, that's just not true.

The average MLB catcher has an OPS+ around 80, last I looked. Most of them hit around a .600-.650 OPS. Only a handful are at league average, 100, and only a couple ahead of that.

Castro is a pretty safe bet to land around league average, and at worst, should be average for a catcher offensively.

Its been awhile, and my brain is getting too old to remember anything anymore. But wasnt Bandy the one that went over in the maldonado trade? And we were ready to riot?

Yep and if you remember, he  had an amazing open to the season for Milwaukee -- something like 4 HRs and an OPS over 1.000...    Then he had like a sub .500 OPS the rest of the season.

Yep, remember that pretty vividly. Looked at the time like we shit the bed HARD. Then he fell out of oblivion seems like.

Maldonado seems to have more MLB experience than Stassi who is said to be a quality defensive catcher but somewhat unproven.

Maldonado was a gold glover for us, has had success with winning Houston teams and seems to work well with pitchers making a good rotation even better (and in the Angels case, a mediocre to OK rotation decent).

but all of this does not matter anymore unless we're going to continue the Maldonado or Stassi issue like the board once did with the Mathis or Napoli issue (perhaps to this day??)

Castro seems to be the guy for 2020 and with the 2020 Halos line up there might be more room for  a purely defensive catcher who hits .235 in a 'good' year.

26 year old defensive catcher with potential to be a decent hitter for a 30 year catcher who can't hit (.203 / .332 last year in 253 PA's) ??? WTF????

I'm fine with selling high on Bandy because I never really bought that, but Maldonado kind of sucks. He's pretty good defensively but he's a true backup really. Surely now we're signing or acquiring another catcher.

Not only was the Bandy/Perez combo going to be a good one for years to come, we had a guy named Jett on the team.  My gut reaction is I do not like this move at all and it came out of nowhere.

Yeah this is the first Eppler trade I'm having a really hard time grasping.

So I'm confused we traded for a guy who batted 202 and 210 the last two years?

THis reeks of a Mike S trade

I'd rather have one solid player than two crappy players. Such a stupid move on Eppler's part. Even if they intend to acquire a catcher like Matt Wieters, you still should have got more for Bandy, or just not traded him at all.

No.  No.  No.  Bandy is younger and cheaper.  They got worse value in return.  I am doing my best to try and figure out this trade but I am only coming up with 4 letter words,

Our trade deals are a disaster folks, Milwaukee is killing us on trade, believe me.

What are you yapping at @Lou that trade did suck. We lost a sweetass 80 grade name in Jett Bandy and ended up with Martin Maldonado, who couldn't hit. Yeah.....so Bandy couldn't hit either, but he had a sweet name. Names are important.

The great thing Maldonado did for us was bet Patrick Sandoval. Which is pretty awesome though.

So I guess it's ok.

Machete is a pretty damn good name ...  at best it's a wash name wise.

It's official.

ANAHEIM – The Angels have agreed to terms on a one-year contract with nine-year Major League veteranJason Castro In a corresponding move, LHP Adalberto Mejía has been designated for assignment. Today’s announcement was made by General Manager Billy Eppler

The Twins Opening Day backstop’s 13 homers as a catcher  were tied for ninth in the American League and were his highest total in a single campaign since 2014 (14 HR).  Defensively in 2019, Castro was tied for the Major League lead with a .999 fielding percentage, committing just one error in over 600 innings caught and ranked seventh in the Junior Circuit (min. 500 innings) in pitch framing.

The 10th overall selection in the 2008 First-Year Player Draft out of Stanford University, Castro has played in parts of nine Major League seasons with the Astros (2010, 2012-16) and Twins (2017-19). Additionally, since 2012, Castro has posted 12.3 bWAR, which ranks 10th by a big league catcher (min. 2500 PA) while his 140 doubles as a catcher rank seventh in that span.
