This might be unpopular but I think overall Eppler has done well

Matt Thaiss was not a Dipoto pick.

Eppler shouldn’t get a hall pass for the 2016 draft 8 months after he was hired. Not how it works.

I’m sure he would own it if he was asked.

I agree, he also shouldn't be judged by one pick.

But let's keep pretending that's what's actually been said instead of the reality that they didn't go into that draft as prepared as they would have been had they been scouting his type of players for more than one cycle.

I'm certain he would tell you that much as well.

That’s a good point but it did not apply to Brandon Marsh in 2016. He signed for slot at 1.073 M.

But it did apply to Chris Rodriguez taken in the fourth round

126. LAA - Chris Rodriguez, RHP, Monsignor Edward Pace HS (Fla.)
$850,000 (Pick value: $464,300)

he was slated to go over slot and ended up going for lower after his medicals came out.  Part of the reason why he didn't sign right away.

here we go again with cherry picking a couple of players from one draft.

there are obviously a bunch of people here who don't understand how scouting for the draft works and what it takes.  I don't either btw, but I'm certainly gonna trust @Inside Pitch

It's really not a matter of trusting me..   I'm not offering my opinion so much as relaying what I was told about that draft..  Also.... It's not like I'm saying this after the fact to defend Eppler, I've said it before.

In truth, I wasn't high on the Thaiss pick, I get they were chasing the guy with the longest established level of performance and all that, but the thought process behind taking a catcher to move him to 1B is IMO sketchy as shit.   First round 1B tend to flop a lot, I know a lot of guys have transitioned from C to 1B and had success so maybe that was their thinking but, it felt like more of the same at the time... That being said, I can't recall who the hell I really liked at the time.  I remember being high on Jesus Luzardo after seeing him throw at a tourney for Parkland and the catcher I would have had them go after was Sean Murphy who the A's ended up taking, but I don't recall being upset over missing a guy..    The hilarious part is that it was my bitching about that pick to those people is what led to the discussions about what all was happening.

History shows what's happened since then.   It's been high risk high reward athletic types and Ric Wilson was sent packing shortly after that draft.
