Ryu: “Angels didn’t want two Asian players on the team”

Heres my take on Ryu.

He would have been a nice addition. And we would have been decided.

....... but even forgetting his injury history, the fact the Dodgers didnt make a big push to keep him is very telling. Not sure what it might be. Lazy? Know something is going to pop arm wise? Etc etc.

The dodgers could absolutely afford him. So it wasnt money. And kershaw is on the downslope. (Alley oop for Cals right there).

That to me is why I was leaning towards Keuchal.

All this stuff about who makes a “formal offer” is ridiculous. The sides talk and figure out if they are in the same ballpark first, and then if they are there is a formal offer.

My understanding - not from Boras, but other sources - is that the Angels had health concerns about Ryu. When I saw he got 4/80, it was obvious that the Angels would not have wanted anything to do with that.

The idea that the Angels wouldn’t want Ryu because he’s Asian is ludicrous, and Boras confirmed that to me.

By the way, it was the original story from Korea that prompted my question, not the rehash from Toronto.

So your sources believe Ryu is inaccurate when he says the Angels did not offer him a contract because he is a Korean star and they already have Ohtani, a Japanese star?

now your saying that "the author believes".....

can't have it both ways

Here’s the key quote:

”Despite serious interest from the Blue Jays, Ryu still wanted to wait for offers from the Angels and Dodgers. In the Dodgers case, it is believed that though there were discussions of bringing Ryu back, the offers that Ryu received were disappointing. As for the Angels, a formal offer was never put on the table. According to Ryu’s camp, the Angels didn’t want two Asian players on the same team. Rather than separating their marketing efforts between the Korean and Japanese markets (the Angels already have Shohei Ohtani, a Japanese player), they instead wanted to focus on Japan.”

This seems odd. Was this a request from Ohtani's camp? Was this Arte meddling and telling Eppler not to pursue Ryu? The info is from a translated article in Korea, so maybe Ryu’s camp was just speculating on why the Angels didn’t pursue him too hard? Really bizarre.

But if that’s accurate that they didn’t want two Asian stars, I doubt that was Eppler making the call. Sounds more like he was given instructions from on high not to pursue Ryu.

This sounds like total BS to me, particularly when you consider the source of the information. I think the Angels didn't want to pay $80M to a starter that has a history of limited innings, which has been reflected in the fact that we have acquired two starters, in Bundy and Teheran, specifically to eat up more innings consistently.

Sad that they went there.

even sadder that anyone would think it was possibly true

Ryu's camp:

To piggyback on this, id almost think there is some truth to it.

Not lil kim of pyongyang. But to the crowd that reads the paper the statement was given to. As in, this guy just had a phenom year, why didnt he score the same payday as guys like cole, strassburg, etc. So his "camp" (which for all we know, isnt his official take on anything) makes up "excuses" (for lack of a better word) to say why ryus market wasnt as big as some would have expected.

Literally, forget formal offers.... if the angels truly didnt want two asians, they would have never met with his people in the first place.

End of story.
