Archer is 9M this season and 11M next season. I don’t necessarily think he’s the answer but I think he’s more of the profile that our FO seeks in SP then Keuchel/Ryu—low cost/commitment, some upside. 
 

 

What sample size? Do you need more proof Archer is a bad choice?

In 2018, Keuchel had a 111 ERA+. In 2017, he had a 141 ERA+.

In 2018, Archer had a 94 ERA+. In 2017, he had a 103 ERA+.

So who has been better over the last 3 years? Who is more likely to put up a 110 ERA+ season in 2020? The guy who has done it in each of the last 3 years, or the guy who hasn't since 2015?

Isn’t this a Chris Archer trade proposal thread? Sure I’d prefer Cole or Keuchel. Why stop there? Let’s compare 2019 deGrom to Archer? You guys are missing the point, and apparently the topic of the thread.

Of course I’d prefer Cole, and probably Keuchel in a vacuum. But I also wouldn’t mind taking a shot at Archer if we can get him on the cheap. And I think a guy like Archer fits the mold of what our FO targets moreso then the remaining FA pitchers out there.

Sure at the right trade price and with a significant offensive upgrade Archer (or equivalent) would work as the final SP acquisition.

Am I missing something? The Angels have Ohtani, Heaney, Bundy, Teheran, and Canning. Only Ohtani didn't have a significantly better ERA+ over the past two seasons than Archer. Who are you planning to replace? If you are going to a 6 man rotation, Barria was better than Archer in one season and Archer in the other. Archer is on the wrong side of 30 and Barria is well on the right side. I like Barria better, but I can understand if you feel differently. Barria also has options while Archer doesn't. I understand if you prefer Archer to Barria, but I can't understand spending an extra $10 million a year and trading several prospects for that privilege. 

BTW, Matt Harvey had a 83 ERA+ in 2018 (93 with the Reds). To me trading for Archer would be like if the Harvey signing were for 2 years and cost us prospects. Yeah, he was good once, but he has lost it and won't get it back.

Archer would've been a great target for the back end of the rotation if they hadn't acquired Bundy and Teheran. And if that were the situation, I certainly wouldn't give up Thaiss, Suarez and Deveaux. F no. Hard pass on that.
