SAN DIEGO — A day after losing out on the best pitcher on the free agent market, the Angels were working toward a deal with Anthony Rendon, the best hitter on this winter’s market.

The deal, which is not yet agreed upon, would likely cost the Angels more than the $210-million, seven-year deal that Rendon rejected from the Washington Nationals earlier.

The Angels had been trying to get Gerrit Cole to anchor their pitching staff, offering him an eight-year deal worth nearly $300 million. But Cole agreed on Tuesday night to a nine-year, $324-million deal to go to the New York Yankees.

Rendon, 29, is coming off a season in which he hit .319 with 34 homers and a 1.010 OPS. He finished third in the National League MVP voting, and helped the Nationals to a World Series title.

If the Angels acquired Rendon, they would still need to upgrade their pitching, but they would have freed up infielders David Fletcher and Luís Rengifo to help them get a pitcher.

The Dodgers and Texas Rangers were considered the other primary contenders for Rendon.

More to come on this story.
