Plan B: What do you think the best option for the Angels is now?

The key is not to panic. If I were Eppler I'd go hard after Rendon or possibly Donaldson. But I'd probably play it mellow with pitchers and avoid spending stupid money on Bumgarner or Ryu, and maybe instead see who slips through the cracks and can be signed for a bargain (Keuchel?). I would also not trade any of the top prospects -- no Adell, Marsh, Adams, etc.

Cole alone did not guarantee a playoff berth next year. Obviously it improves their chances, the plan always was--and remains--to improve year to year and become a powerhouse by 2022 or so.

So if I'm Eppler, I try to put together a really good lineup, and a stealthily good and mostly homegrown rotation and bullpen.

I agree on Adell definitely, but if Marsh can bring us back Contreras or an all star level pitcher then it’s a go.

What about an all Asian top of the rotation? Sign Rendon & Ryu & then trade for Darvish & Contreras.

Rotation: Ohtani, Darvish, Ryu, Canning, Bundy/Heaney

Lineup: 2B Fletcher, CF Trout, 3B Rendon, DH Ohtani, C Contreras, LF Upton, 1B La Stella/Pujols, RF Adell/Goodwin, SS Simba

Thoughts?

Rendon, Keuchel, trade for Darvish and Contreras.  Don’t give up Adell.  Look for value adds at first base.

With the Cubs looking to lose Kris Bryant via trade or after another year of service time loss, we could give them Matt Thaiss who is getting a TON of rave reviews for his defense at 3B and he's hitting well in winter ball. Did well in his first cup of coffee. Former 1st round pick, etc.

Thaiss, Barria, Suarez and Adams for Darvish (Cubs pick up some of that money) and Contreras.

They gotta compete with the Dodgers for Rendon, who have a much better track record of success, not to mention a much better roster to lean on with regards to negotiations.

Dodgers will pivot now and get Bumgarner. They have enough position players.

I think our biggest competitors for Rendon will be the Rangers.
