Castellanos looms too, and while he doesn’t fit as well as Rendon he could still come at good value, and Donaldson at fewer years.

Basically, there are options still. Minnesota won by just clubbing the shit out of everyone and having a solid staff. Weaker division, but there is a path still if we just opt for all offense and durable arms.

Yep I’m still low key hoping for Castellanos

Challenge is...they currently have 0 to maybe 1 durable arms and the staff as currently constructed does not come close to being considered solid

Ohtani - coming off Tommy John

Heaney - history of injuries

Canning - second year...shut down last year due to workload/fatigue (hopefully)

Bundy - bottom of the rotation guy

Salt Lake Shuttle

I love Rendon but think he’s going to be exceptionally expensive too, especially since he’s more open to higher AAV/shorter-term deals.

Castellanos *might* come as a relative bargain leaving room for more adds, and perhaps he turned a corner last year and is a .950+ OPS bat for a few years.

No one agrees with you more here than me in that regard. Bundy is literally the only guy we can really bank on at this moment that’s on the roster. And we can’t bank on him for much.

So, failing Cole, maybe it’s, at best:

  • Rendon and Ryu/Bumgarner or trade for top arm
  • Castellanos and Ryu/Bumgarner and one more value add like Roark, perhaps even Keuchel
  • A big trade solving both and minor FAs added

BTW, outside of Trout and Ohtani.  No one else hit an OPS above .800 last season.  Goodwin and Calhoun were the only other two to have an OPS+ over 100.  La Stella showed promise in this half season.  But when you are 30, and the most games you have played in a season is 123, it's probably best not to pen him in.  That's why IMO, if we want to be competitive next season.  We need a big bat (Rendon, Donaldson) to go with Ohtani and Trout in addition to making that mess of a starting pitching staff much better and maybe a pen arm.  It's still not my money, so get on it Arte.

Why does this have to be a fall back?

Arte has repeatedly said hes all in, all in doesn't mean one or the other or Cole and bust.   This has been my greatest fear for this off season, no question, and none of us know what all in means to him, but it cant mean one or the other can it?  Thats not logical.

He could do both, trade for a young catcher perhaps using some of the depth created, bring in Maldonado to mentor and develop them, build a winner now, let the books balance as some of the high priced guys fall off in the next couple years, and have it all... if hes will to overspend for a couple years.

Is that financially sound, of course not but all in doesnt usually have those kind of implied limitations.   This should be the kind of move Arte has dreamed about, a change to build the winner AND punk the Dodgers at the same time?  Itsnt that worth a measly 100 M over a couple years?

Are there any ace type of arms on the trade block right now? I haven't heard anything about a big arm potentially moving, not the type of guy you are willing to give up top prospects for.

Rotation as been an issue far too long. None of the guys currently in the rotation should be considered a top of the rotation type of guy. Maybe Ohtani has the stuff, but he's coming off injury and I'd consider him a lottery ticket...and he's certainly not going to give you 180+ innings...anything you get out of him should be looked at as a bonus. If the Angels go into the season banking on him being a frontline starter who takes the ball every 5 to 6 days, they are making the same mistake they've made the last few years, hoping a $10 scratcher, duct tape and clapping louder will fill a huge whole.

So, to bring it back to topic...even if the plan is to try and outscore everyone...they still need to go out and get two starters at least.

Best out there, realistically, would be Price, Darvish, Minor, Ray, Syndergaard, Kluber...so, no, not really. If it goes that way, hopefully they’re paired up with a FA signing like Ryu, Bumgarner, or at worst, one or even two of the next tier, Keuchel, Teheran, Roark, Wood...far from the Cole dreams we had, so ideally they’re also adding some to the offense to try and find some more wins.

Rendon opens the door for us to trade an infielder for another starting pitcher

And also lessens the need for catcher to be a good hitter - they can scrimp a bit and trade/sign someone with more defense, maybe saving a couple mil more for pitching.

Exactly.

Also for those talking about Catellanos, why?  We have 2 guys coming up very soon why block them for 2-3 years?  Hes not signing a one year deal... but you know who might, Yasiel Puig.   Hes a natural RF, great plug in for Calhoun with as we all know cannon arm, still only 29 and hits well enough putting up a slash of 267/327/785 with 24 bombs.  Hes perfect for a 1 year deal to rebuild himself and re-hit the open market for a payday once we have Adell and Marsh ready.

In absence of Cole...that might be their best option. Spend on more offense, spend 100 million on a guy like Ryu/Bumgarner and then trade. You could probably pick up Price cheap, but to me he's another lottery ticket type of guy...except the $80 million variety.

It’s entirely feasible that Castellanos could play 1B, in which case he’s only blocking Thaiss who could go to 3B or be traded for that arm we need.

20: Castellanos starts in RF and starts picking up some 1B when Bert needs time off. Occasional DH/LF start. As Adell forces the issue, Castellanos plays more 1B, Pujols sits more, which probably helps him, maybe Ohtani DHs a little less and pitches a little more, which probably helps us. Adell can spot Upton and Trout too for playing time, especially if Upton doesn’t bounce back. Pujols can be used as a key situation PH, which he still does well in.

Also, if Adell doesn’t take off, or if Upton, Trout, Ohtani, or Pujols go down, we have a .850-.950 OPS insurance policy now.

21: Pujols is more part-time than ever, Castellanos primarily 1B, still gets an occasional game at LF/RF/DH. No longer need a 4th OF full-time on roster, Adell can spot Trout.

22: Pujols is gone, Castellanos is full-time 1B.

23: Upton he gone, Castellanos can split time at 1B/DH.

Feasable sure but why go there if you dont have to?
You could go get Puig or bring back Calhoun for less and not have the complications.
For me it just seems money better spent elsewhere if were truly inspecting one or both of Adell/Marsh to be in Ana at some point in '20.   When both are ready im thinking Upton seeing time at 1B.. just seems to create more than it solves for only marginally better stats.

Would Darvish really be a bad option though?  3.98 ERA, 1.097 WHIP, Era+ 112 in 2019.  He had a down year in 2018.  Overall in his career, ERA in the 3's, WHIP under 1.2.   Has some arm issues.  Signed 4 more years, 22, 22, 19, 18 million a year.  Sounds like the Cubs are looking to trade him.  We could get him, and another piece on the cheap trade wise.  Darvish as a #1, hell no.  Darvish as a #2, maybe but preferably not.  Darvish as a #3 pitcher though would be a pretty good fit.  Move Ohtani to #4 and not push his arm.  Bundy #5.  Of course we still need Cole and another pitcher.  But that's just how bad our starting pitching situation is right now.

Puig is a disaster. Calhoun and Castellanos offensively probably don’t compare the next few years.

Adell and Marsh, especially Marsh, don’t *need* to play in Anaheim until 1) they’re ready and 2) there’s a need and that’s not guaranteed in 2020, especially the first half.

Not much of a risk if you can get him on a one year deal

Based on what?  I know hes has some attitude issues but his numbers didnt suck, still a better than average WAR.  Calhoun has almost the same WAR as Castellanos and could he had for far less.  Just seems a luxury we dont need to me is all.
IF we did all this other stuff and then still did him, fine i guess but otherwise no.

This is actually, potentially better for our payroll needs. Putting Rendon on a 2-5 year contract would allow us to utilize his best years, albeit at higher AAV's, and then slide out under the Luxury Tax. This would all be just in time to give Ohtani and Adell potential extensions too.
