OC Register: Angels manager Joe Maddon open to having Shohei Ohtani hit when he pitches

SAN DIEGO — The Angels might be getting a little more out of Shohei Ohtani than expected.

When Ohtani was a two-way player in the first half of his rookie season, the Angels separated his pitching and hitting duties, but Manager Joe Maddon said on Monday that he’s open to having Ohtani hit on the days he is pitching. The Angels would simply forgo the use of the designated hitter on those days.

“Why wouldn’t you?” Maddon said. “That’s another 50 at-bats a year that you’re going to get out of the guy that you wouldn’t get otherwise.”

The Angels still haven’t said exactly what they plan for Ohtani in 2020. In 2018, he pitched about once a week, taking the day off entirely before and after he pitched. In between, he was available to be the designated hitter.

For now, they simply want him to complete his rehab from Tommy John surgery, which was interrupted by knee surgery in September. He has been throwing off a mound for about a week, with about two more weeks to go.

New Angels pitching coach Mickey Callaway was there to see Ohtani throw on Monday in Anaheim, and he came away impressed.

General Manager Billy Eppler read from a text Callaway sent him after the bullpen session: “Shohei looked pretty darn good today. He does it very easy.” Callaway added: “I like this guy.”

The Angels continue to look for a new catcher, and Eppler said they will prioritize defense. They have a meeting scheduled with Martín Maldonado, and Eppler said he was scheduled to meet with the agents for other free agent catchers. He also said he had potential trades working with two teams for a catcher. …

The Angels signed left-hander Hoby Milner to a minor-league deal. Milner, 28, has a 3.40 ERA in 42-1/3 innings over parts of three seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies and Tampa Bay Rays. Eppler said he will come to camp with a chance to win a spot in the bullpen.
