Travis d’Arnaud signs with the Braves (2 years, $16 million)

Although my current write up of the Catcher part of the Primer Series mentions d'Arnaud as a possible free agent target, I still believe that any catcher we acquire is more likely to come through a trade, rather than free agency. That being said Jason Castro or possibly Alex Avila are the more likely targets if we spend payroll only.

I will also note that $8M per season for Travis feels expensive.

d’Arnaud becomes the 7th highest paid catcher in the league (in terms of AAV) behind:

Posey

Molina

Grandal

Perez

Realmuto

Ramos

Avila heck yes. I'd be thrilled with 2 top SP and Avila vs 1 SP and grandal

D'Arnaud wasn't a fit in the first place. Calloway was his manager and BVW had to have run the idea of releasing him by Calloway before doing it last year.

Again, the Angels need a veteran presence to guide the young starters, someone that has a rapport with Calloway to get this pitching staff back on track. Yan Gomes seems like a great fit.

Pretty balanced catcher between offense and defense, he was there with Calloway in Cleveland, plenty of post season experience, not too old or expensive. You can afford him and the pitchers you need.

Hopefully they'll be able to get Gomes for 1/6, with a second year team option. And as a side benefit, the Angels signed Luiz Gohara to deal while he rehabs from shoulder surgery. Huge upside, but if he does make it back it'll likely be as a reliever. If they signed Gomes, they'd have the Brazilian market cornered in MLB.

Feels like a missed opportunity for the Angels, but I will reserve judgement until at least January

It was a missed opportunity when he was DFAed and available for a waiver claim.

Now he's a guy that parlayed a hot two month stretch into 2 years and 16 mil...   From August on he posted a .644 OPS, falling back to being the same sub .300 OBP hitter he had been the previous three years 2016-2018.

MLB teams have access to a lot of info we don't, maybe Atlanta thinks it's real but this is one time I'm happy the Angels missed.

If you miss out on Grandal then you don't turn around and take 8m away from your budget to get a 2nd tier catcher when there are plenty of other 2nd tier options and you haven't done anything else.

Even if d'Arnaud ends up having a solid year, you'd don't let it keep you from targeting someone like Wheeler.  And what I mean by that is I'd rather be able to give Wheeler an extra 10-12 mil and have a lesser catcher.
