Per MLB site we have 3 eligible, they dont seem to high on any of them but i gotta think we protect Jones at least?:

Los Angeles Angels (3)
6) Jahmai Jones, 2B
17) Hector Yan, LHP
25) Leonardo Rivas, SS/2B
No-brainers to protect: N/A
Could be intriguing to other clubs: Jones, Yan

Yan isn't R5 eligible according to Fangraphs/Roster Resource. He will be next year.

I think they meant Oliver Ortega. Jose Rojas, Adrian De Horta, and Brennon Lund are other fringe candidates.

think they'll add Jones, to be honest, and maybe Ortega.

You may be right on that i was just going from the list.  One would think MLBs own data would be right though?  🙂

Sidenotes, the Yankees have an issue there as they have 6 that were all deemed worthy of protecting or of interest to other teams, i dont think they have that kind of roster space available but know little about them.

I went thru the list and saw a couple interesting options, lots of pitchers will be available and a couple bats that might be of interest... Tyler Nevin out of Col system and Bret Cumberland out of Bal.   Nevin a bit redundant of course and Cumberland blocked perhaps hopelessly by Rutschman.

Oliver Ortega is the exact sort of prospect that gets selected in the Rule 5 Draft. He's in AA and can touch upper-90's with his fastball pretty consistently. He isn't good as a starter and so the logical conclusion here is that he will transition to relief. And as a reliever, he really won't need much minor league time. Just rock and fire.

So I think Ortega would be selected in the Rule 5, and some team would give him a tryout in Spring Training.

I think they'll protect Jones and Ortega.  I think they'll leave Rojas unprotected and he might get selected.  They have two spots on their 40 man right now but I could see them ousting Bemboom and Rodriguez to make additional space if needed.

If they take anyone, it will be a relief prospect.  Maybe a catcher.

Based off the adds of Castillo and Madero to the 40-man the last two years though, both had only reached A+ at the time, I believe there's some precedent there to suggest the Angels will also add Ortega.

De Horta was also filthy in AAA after some awful first outings, and would occupy a comparable spot on the depth chart as Ortega.

I'm not sure Rojas will get picked...they didn't protect Walsh last year and he was arguably much more intriguing at that time than Rojas will be this year. .900 AAA OPS, ability to pitch, way better defense...

more versatility.  Rojas can play 1b/2b/3b/LF.  Easier to stash a guy like that on your bench as a util and hope the bat plays.

I like Cumberland and wouldn't mind picking him up but his defense isn't as solid as other choices so as a Rule 5 pick for the Angels it is probably a no.

Fair point, just seemed like a potential target from the list that was higher up on the charts.   Nothing earth shattering but then if it was we wouldn't be talking rule 5 🙂

any news?

Teams have until 8PM ET.

I guess Yan is R5 eligible, Fangraphs has updated it. So, you figure he's almost a certain addition.

Presumably, Eppler is hunting around the trade market, looking for anyone who might be roster-crunched out, or perhaps shopping some of the Angels R5 eligible guys for an arm. Jones, Ortega, and Yan would make for a nice offer for Ray, Boyd, Gray, etc.

Anyone seen a list of top guys that weren’t protected so we can start to speculate on who the Angels will go after?

I have a feeling it's gonna be a little trickier this year. The 40-man is going to be pretty full with our own optionable, internal prospects. Teams are catching on too, the talent avail in R5 each year is declining more and more.

A potential lefty-specialist, a multi-inning RP/spot starter, a defense-first catcher, or a 4th OF seem like where we'd shop.

Quick glance...Thomas Burrows? Will Stewart?
