GM Billy Eppler admits to risky FA signings last season

I still agree with his philosophy. The unfortunate part was that Allen, Harvey and Cahill completely shit the bed and were untradeable. LaStella was on a tear then hurt himself which made him untradeable (I think they could have gotten a decent ROI on him had he been healthy). My biggest issue with what he did was not making any moves. Goodwin could have netted a low A prospect unless of course they knew they weren't resigning Kole.

One year contracts aren't exactly bad.

Wasting a season of the best player in the league's prime because you decided to sign a bunch of one year contracts is bad.

Yeah but to be fair, Arte's had a tight budget until this offseason so Eppler's hands were kind of tied.

That said, the FA's he did sign have been kind of shitty. Luckily three of them were 1-year deals.

Harvey, Cahill, Allen and Lucroy were all shit.. but then there's Cozart that he signed for a 3-year 30 million dollar deal.

The good news is he flipped Ian Kinsler (who he traded for) for Buttrey and picked up Robles and between Ty and Robles we're going to have a lights out 1-2 punch at the backend of games.

Their number one goal was to get Trout locked up.  Without him locked up you have zero idea what the direction of the club was going to be.  Without him locked up you don’t know what your budget should be.

and free agents don't know that as well.  now that they know he's gonna be here the entire time they are here is huge.

I imagine you’d have been pretty excited if they got Eovaldi instead of Harvey last year. Or Happ.

This is sorta my prospective. After we whiffed on Corbin, I am not so sure that any other options would have justified their cost. Even Keuchel wasn't worth surrendering a pick for.
