When he wasn't injured, he was a heavy hitting catcher.  The fact that he wa splaying injured and with no momentum and timing, even his overall line is pretty decent for a catcher, particularly a back up.  

Not only is Kevan Smith better than the overall line, but a career line of .272/.318 really isn't bad at all for a catcher, and certainly not light hitting.

If I'm Eppler I sign Martin Maldonado. Check out Gerrit Cole's personal catcher's stats when he caught him, vs. all other Astros catchers since he was traded there.

Yup. Stassi more than likely will miss April and possibly May. That's enough time to figure out what they'll get from Maldonado and Smith. If Martin is guiding the staff and Kevan is hitting, Stassi can be cut loose. If Martin isn't guiding the staff at the level they hoped, they can replace him with Stassi. If Smith isn't hitting, he too can be replaced by Stassi. And if they all suck, well then it really doesn't matter what you do.

This is all posturing. We will see what happens in the off season. He can’t come out and say we are desperate for catchers and starting pitchers and will pay whatever it takes.

That does not give me a warm and fuzzy.   Its clearly the most obvious area we could improve the offense and if true it means we will not be doing so at all so.  Im hoping this is posturing, but i get the feeling it isnt.
