Epplers “wide net” is baby brained BS

Recommended Posts

I'm not the biggest Eppler fan, but I would wait until this offseason is over before making any sharp judgements about him. Of course, if he fails I will become his biggest detractor.

Obviously you don't remember the Ohtani sweepstakes. Proves Eppler can't get the big one.

Yep, he was a nobody.   But I think Chuck was meaning the traditional big money FA types...

I get that he doesn’t say much and maybe he shouldn’t say anything but if anyone read that and thought “that sounds smart” then please stop commenting on the Angels forever.  The Angels must sign at least one of Cole, Strasburg or Wheeler.  Failure to do so means that Epplers time at the Big A has come to an end.  The Angels have maybe 5 years to do something with Mike Trout.  This isn’t an open ended thing.  There isn’t plenty of time.  Spend what has to be spent and make this shit happen.  Now.

I agree 100 % but would expand to say he needs to sign two if we want an October.

Fair enough, but I think Ohtani actually is a better example if we are just isolating GM skill. When everyone had basically the same set budget Eppler won. He pulled out all the stops and got Ohtani. Maybe it's been the budget that has stopped him with the traditional big money FAs.

Right now, I think he has done a good job. HE rebuilt the minor leagues in two years but he does need to put things together now while Trout is young.

I agree he was a huge huge coup and his not having the budget to really chase before this year was my line of thinking as well.

Hes never been in a situation where Arte said, go ahead and run the table...  I also meant it when I said that people will want to sing his praises if he signs Cole, but it will be Arte that allowed it to happen.

It's Arte's off-season IMO...

Cole is spicy tuna roll.      Eovaldi was mackeral.

I appreciate what you’re trying to do here but a spicy tuna role is basically a California roll tier type of sushi.  It can be pretty yummy but it’s pretty standard fare.  Cole is more like blue fin fatty tuna.  The expensive shit they run out of.

Correct.

Plus Eppler had only 5 other teams to compete with and used Trout as bait.

And pretty much anytime you're talking about a big money FA -- it's never really more than 5 teams in consideration.   Trout will still be bait..   Basically, it's the same thing -- not sure why you want to downplay it so hard.

Trout signed his extension after spring training began. He was not a selling point during the hot stove when all of the media was talking about him being a trade candidate.
