Angels and city of Anaheim to start negotiations November 15th

Recommended Posts

It'll be interesting to see what comes of it. Personally, I think it's entirely possible the Angels and the major already have a framework in place. I'd love to see Angel Stadium's piping gutted, and a more modern, smaller seat stadium built in its place.

The playing surface doesn't need to change so much. We have a pretty solid ground crew and the field dimensions aren't completely stupid. I mean I'd prefer the corners and RCF gap extended our about 10 feet, but that's just nitpicking. It's just everything around the field itself that needs to be changed.

Honestly Claude -- giving them free rent would be the cheapest route for the city..

My guess is they will play a game where they do charge rent and then offer some tax free subsidy and get a better share of the revenue from whatever is built.  That way they can pawn it off as a win to the voters saying "OMG LOOK AT HOW MUCH MORE THEY ARE PAYING FOR RENT NOW!!!!!!111!!!" ..  Meanwhile the Angels play the long game and make twice as much as they would have...

This is all for show now...

I hope that they can somehow come to a resolution that results in a true stadium renovation. I follow the Trojans ( sorry Lou ) and they did a fantastic job renovating the inside of the Coliseum. Hope they can somehow redo the Rose Bowl also someday as it is an epic stadium also.

It does need a rather extensive renovation. We've seen the stadium get a face lift here and there, the most significant about 20 years ago. But this time, a face lift would be useless. It'd be preferable if they tore it down and rebuilt it, but that likely won't happen. But new seating arrangement, getting rid of the rocks and waterfall in CF, moving the scoreboard, expanded concourses and more areas for local services to get involved.

I'd love to see the Angels do what the Padres did at Petco, which is create a modern, unique field that identifies with the area, and put in an actual infrastructure to allow traveling and tailgating the game itself to be an event, but that would require the surrounding areas to be built up.

What could the stadium include from the surrounding area that would help make it unique and identify with So-Cal? Other than palm trees.

This seems like the closest they have been in a long time.

Adding some type of shade structure wouldn’t hurt. Those mid-summer games in RF are brutal.

Seriously though. Does anyone know what kind of theme they'd use to make this an Orange County or Southern California specific stadium?

The Dodgers went heavy on the palm trees, which is a good move, the Padres kept the Western Metal Supply building and the surrounding areas have a vibrant San Diego theme.

What could the Angels do to make this a unique visual experience? The whole rocks and water fall theme in CF is more California in general, it at least the places North of Southern California, and that worked while they were the California Angels. But they aren't representing an entire state anymore.

Maybe lush orange groves as a throwback to the area's history? Or maybe Arte is more interest on identifying as Los Angeles specific as the name would suggest, so palm trees like the Dodgers. Maybe some sort of beach theme?

I'd like to hear other ideas.

Here’s a theme that fits OC today and they won’t need to go far to incorporate it...

At some point, renovating is a waste.

I think they will build a new stadium.  I dont think that will be decided by the end of the year.

Ran across some old newspaper clippings yesterday.  A couple about the Disney deal to buy the Angels being "dead".

I'm prepared to hear a lot of nonsense in the coming weeks and months regarding these negotiations

I'm hoping they build a new modern stadium in the parking lot, like Mets did. They played a couple season in Shea, while they built the new stadium in the parking lot. The Rangers and Yankees did practically the same thing also.

I'm not sure if they could do a complete renovation on the old stadium during the offseason, in time for the new season.

I'm guessing they would need to do it in stages. Some renovation next off-season, then more the two following winters.

But I'm with you, I think a new stadium is the best option.

The orange trees are a good idea.

Personally I like the Mission Revival and Mediterranean Revival styles in architecture. Not sure it would really work for a modern stadium but it definitely says "California." Sort of like L.A. Union Station and the Casino on Catalina Island:

Disney had a deal to buy the team but didn't have a deal with the city for the stadium lease. So Disney called off the deal to buy the team  -- and, surprise, the lease negotiations got done pretty quickly.

That's actually a really good idea and in a way it pays homage to the original home of the PCL Angels, the old Wrigley Field in LA.

Maybe design it to reflect the San Juan Capistrano Mission.

Would definitely like a mission style stadium and surrounding development. Orange trees, palm trees, and olive trees would be great.

Not sure it's possible, practical or economical in a modern 40,000+ seat stadium, but it would be unique. It could be a really beautiful building. You could picture walking through the bottom level concourse with citrus trees and Spanish style fountains. Instead of the stupid BBQ thing they have now they could have open grills with Santa Maria style tri-tip.

for those of you who'd like a new stadium, why? what is our current stadium lacking that a new stadium would fulfill for you/us/the team?

I really don't care if they build a new stadium, but I think some fans are like the people who buy a new car every couple years - even though the car they have is working fine.

I will say there are certain areas of seating where the view is obstructed... more than most people realize.

like the field level seats in right field by between the foul pole and the right field bleachers.

i'm not a big fan of the 200 level seats either, especially if you're close to the concession stands. you can't see the giant scoreboard and fly balls are out of view.

Yup... down in the left field corner too - you can't see CF.  There are areas in the upper view where you can't see down the lines into the corners.  And I hear you on the 200 seats...
