Free agent agreements?

Is it feasible/possible for Eppler to go to multiple free agents who may be interested in signing with the Angels and asking them to give a small discount in order for all to be signed?

It’s feasible but really unlikely. Too many variables involved. Ironically, with Boras being involved with so many FA, this makes it both more likely and unlikely at the same time.

No.  It’s not a successful strategy to orchestrate something like that up front.  Just pay the fair price for what you need.

Once you have an almost complete roster that is really impressive, then MAYBE another key player will organically be more attracted to playing for your team and this may temper their salary stance. Maybe.

The main point is there is no reason to get cute. Every free agent contract is freely negotiated so whatever the market price is for the player is just as fair to the team as it is for the player.

This would only work if there was max contracts like the NBA.

It's probably not as likely in MLB where, outside of the luxury tax, there are really no limits on what teams can pay players. The strategy of coming to players with a trade-off of lower salary for a better chance to win works better in the NBA where there is a hard cap as well as strict limits on what players can be paid based on a variety of factors. I like that MLB has stayed away from a hard salary cap. I wish they'd ditch the luxury tax. Those artificially limit what players can make and shift much more money back to the owners, as well as offering a nice cop-out for owners that don't want to spend the money to retain popular players or sign marquee free agents.

Agree with everything you said. This sport isn’t like the other major sports. You’re on the same team but you’re really not playing with others. It’s not like Mike Trout is giving assists to you like LeBron would or throwing you a pass like Tom Brady. It’s very unique. Pay what you think is fair to the players you want on the team.
