For the second day in a row, the Angels took a flier on a reliever, picking up right-hander Mike Mayers on a waiver claim from the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday.

Mayers, 27, has a 7.03 ERA over parts of four seasons with the Cardinals, including 80-2/3 innings. He had a 6.63 ERA last season in 19 innings, with 16 strikeouts and 11 walks.

A former third-round pick, Mayers has a career 3.48 ERA in the minors.

Mayers averaged 94.8 mph with his fastball last season, with above-average spin.

Mayers is out of options next season. Parker Markel, who the Angels picked up from the Pittsburgh Pirates in a deal for cash considerations on Thursday, can be optioned.
