Still, we're paying more money for a defensive first catcher. And it's not like Chirinos is bad defensively.

last year the two very nearly identical offensively.  
JC:  232/332/767
RC:  238/347/790
Albiet in less at bats but neither one of them is significantly better than the other with the bat overall.
If Castro is indeed the better defender, it would seem we got the better player overall since neither one is going to be all that with bat in hand.

I was more looking at the overall production but you do have a fair point.

Not to mention that Castro is a better pitch framer, which is probably a more valuable skill, relatively, given the state of our rotation.
