Mickey Callaway, who pitched briefly with the Angels before a successful career as a big league coach and a less successful stint as a manager, will join Joe Maddon’s staff as the Angels’ pitching coach, a source confirmed Saturday.

The Angels have not officially named any members of the staff under Maddon, who was hired as manager last week.

The only two confirmed staff openings were at pitching coach and bench coach, with the other positions left to be determined after a manager was hired.

Callaway, 44, was recently fired after two years as the New York Mets’ manager, after leading them to a record of 163-161. He had one year remaining on his contract when the Mets let him go.

Prior to that, Callaway spent five seasons as the Cleveland Indians’ pitching coach, helping the Indians to the World Series in 2016. The Indians lost that series to the Chicago Cubs, managed by Maddon.

The Indians had the a 3.65 ERA over Callaway’s five seasons, the best mark in the American League over that span. Their 454 victories were also the most in the league over those years.

Corey Kluber won the Cy Young Award in 2014 and 2017, under Callaway’s tutelage.

A product of the University of Mississippi, Callaway originally signed with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in 1996. He reached the majors with the Devil Rays in 1999.

Callaway pitched in just 40 big-league games over parts of five seasons, including 23 games with the Angels in 2002 and 2003. Maddon was the Angels bench coach in those seasons.

The Angels will be on their third pitching coach in three seasons, with Charlie Nagy departing along with Manager Mike Scioscia after the 2018 season.

Doug White was the pitching coach for the Angels’ only season under Brad Ausmus, with both being fired just after this season.

Although the Angels suffered a raft of injuries mostly responsible for their poor performance on the mound, White admitted there were some communication issues early in his his first season as a big-league pitching coach.

Seriously, if someone told me to build the perfect major league coaching staff, it would start with Joe Maddon at manager and Mickey Calloway as pitching coach.

You can't start the 2019/2020 off-season any better than the Angels have so far.
