Personally, I would like to see the halos steer clear of any major trades this winter, but it could be a very interesting market

There could be some big names out there.  Although teams seem to hold on to their prospects like sweet death these days.

So who do you think are the buyers and sellers and who gets traded and where?

I'll start with one.  I think the Twins will make a big trade for a pitcher after losing Odorizzi, Gibson and Pineda.  I'm thinking Robbie Ray.

The Yankees are going to trade Voit or Andujar. Bird will also get traded or released. They will most likely let Didi hit the open market and put Gleyber in at SS. They will need to make final decisions on Frazier and Gardner. CF Hicks may need TJ surgery. Do not expect the Yankees to be in on Cole. They will be in the market for a couple of second tier starters. This is an area that Eppler has to pay attention to.

You keep saying the Yankees won't be in on Cole and that is just stupid. They are a Marquee based franchise. They took on Stanton and his monsterous contract just to put a name in an outfield that was already good.

They lost CC Sabathia and need a front line starter, everything else in their rotation is at best second tier. They are not repeating as AL East champions or moving forward in the playoffs without an ace. So they will be bidding.

They’re also possibly losing Tanaka and Paxton next year though too...and they’re not exactly brimming with MLB-ready SP prospects.

Cole will be on the radar for sure, and I imagine they’ll put in a serious bid, but I think they might be more interested in landing a couple arms a tier lower to keep payroll a little more flexible, they are trying to avoid LT penalties, and secure more overall coverage for their rotation. Cole’s great but he only gives them an arm every five days. I think Wheeler is a good fit here too, as well as Ryu, Bumgarner, Hamels, Keuchel, Odorizzi, and some flyer guys like Porcello, Wacha, Pineda, Miley, Gio, Wood, Roark. Signing a couple gives them a little more to work with.

I honestly think that they’ll peek in on Cole but won’t be serious buyers. Now if they find a way to move Stanton then that could change. The Yankees won’t commit to another long term $200M+ deal. They actually have enough pitching to survive on if healthy and stay away from domestic violence. Their biggest problem this season was injuries. They have young pitchers in German and Montgomery. They have Severino, Paxton and Tanaka. They’re going to have Frazier and Andujar as trade chips for more pitching. They want Cole to leave Houston but not to Boston.

Just my guess.....

1. The Red Sox will trade Jackie Bradley Jr. this winter, and will trade Mookie Betts at the deadline next year.

2. The D-Backs are going to trade Robbie Ray.

3. The Rays will trade Ji Man Choi.

4. The Indians are going to trade Kluber and Carrasco if they can.

5. Jerry Dipoto will be willing to trade anyone, and I mean ANYONE.

6. The Nationals are going to trade Yan Gomes to the Angels.

7. The Reds and Mets won't trade anyone until the trade deadline in 2020, but when they do, Syndergaard, Bauer, Stroman will all be on the move.

There are enough mediocre catchers on the FA market to choose from without trading for Yan Gomes. The Angels need a catcher who can be around for more than one year. I would like to see a trade for Caratini from the Cubs.

That's great and everything, except the Cubs aren't going to be willing to trade Caratini unless the Angels come to them offering up Marsh and more. And even then, they may be more willing to trade Contreras because he's closer to free agency, in which case it's going to cost a lot more than Brandon Marsh.

You might be fine with giving up serious prospect capital for a catcher, but I'd just as soon keep our top prospects and get a solid overall catcher with two years of control.

The Angels likely targets via trade are Gomes and Hedges, that's it..

Eppler gave up two solid low-level prospects for the literal worst hitter ever. GM's when Eppler comes asking for an even remotely decent catcher:

I'm still scratching my head over that one.

how many of you can name the 2 guys we gave up for Stassi without using the googles?

if you raised your hand, you're lying.

Wrong. They both have unique names.

I've actually called Stassi "Massi" a few times.

On a FanGraphs Def/G rate basis for the last three years with a minimum 150 PA's, Stassi has ranked 3rd over that time period. Statistically he is an excellent defender which is what Eppler wants in his pitching staff. Notably Stassi is an above average pitch framer too. Oh and he is a terrible hitter unfortunately but he has other qualities Billy wants in an up-the-middle position.
