OC Register: Padres hitting coach Johnny Washington joins Angels’ managerial candidate list

Johnny Washington, the San Diego Padres’ hitting coach last season, is the fourth candidate on the Angels’ list for an interview for their manager job, according to a source.

His inclusion was first reported by Bleacher Report’s Scott Miller.

He joins Joe Maddon, Buck Showalter and John Farrell as confirmed candidates. It is unclear if the Angels have completed all four interviews, but a source confirmed earlier this week that the Angels had only scheduled four.

Maddon remains the favorite for the job, with an announcement possible within the next several days.

Washington has never managed at any level, having served as a hitting coach in the organization for the past three years. His only year as a major league coach was 2019.

Washington had been coaching in the Dodgers’ system for the previous eight years.

Washington, 35, was a 27th-round pick of the Texas Rangers out of Mt. San Antonio College in 2003. He spent seven years playing in the Dodgers and Texas Rangers organizations, and then three more playing in independent leagues.

That's Claudell Washington. The Angels picked him up near the end of his career and he posted a respectable 111 OPS+ season. The next year they flipped him to the Yankees for Louis Polonia.
