OC Register: Buck Showalter, John Farrell join Joe Maddon among Angels’ managerial candidates

Veteran managers Buck Showalter and John Farrell are among the four candidates the Angels are interviewing this week for their managerial opening, a source confirmed on Wednesday.

They join Joe Maddon, who remains the favorite for the job. The fourth candidate is unknown.

As of Wednesday night, the Angels had not completed the four interviews.

Although speculation throughout the industry is that Maddon will get the job, perhaps by the end of this week, Angels general manager Billy Eppler insisted last week they would conduct a full search.

Showalter and Farrell have both managed multiple teams in the majors, with Farrell winning the World Series with the Boston Red Sox in 2013.

Showalter, 63, has managed the New York Yankees, Arizona Diamondbacks, Texas Rangers and Baltimore Orioles. After stints of four years or less with the first three teams, he managed the Orioles for eight and a half seasons.

Showalter took five of his teams to the playoffs, although he never reached the World Series.

Farrell, 57, pitched for the Angels in two of his eight seasons before embarking on a coaching career that would include stints as a pitching coach and manager.

Farrell was the pitching coach for the Boston Red Sox when they won the World Series in 2007. He left to manage the Toronto Blue Jays in 2011 and 2012, and then returned to manage the Red Sox.

Farrell led the Red Sox for five seasons, including three division titles and the 2013 World Series title.
