Samardzija?

Signing Cole is key, but almost all plans acknowledge that bringing in multiple bodies is necessary.  They will not all be aces.  So who is a fit as the less glamorous guy brought in?

Doesn’t Samardzija seem like a mid rotation fit for innings and stability and veteran leadership?

What would you be willing to trade away for Samardzija (obviously provides the Angels can land Cole)?

It would have to be mostly a salary dump.

Essentially like Cozart and a nothing prospect.

after looking at the Giants roster, that team over achieved big time with 77 wins.  They're terrible.  They need to have a full fire sale.

Posey has 2/48
Longoria 3/60
Cueto 2/49
Samardzija 1/20
Crawford 2/30
Belt 2/35

they literally have no good young players on that team and their farm system is ok.

Posey at the end of his career is a major upgrade at catcher for the Angels in any situation. Assuming he can catch many game...

I’ll take him if SF eats some money

He's a perfect candidate for the Angels.

He'll come here and post a 5.50 ERA with 3.24 HR allowed per 9 IP.

Yup....

Dude is the 2020 poster boy (pitcher) for the ERA is a lie campaign.   BABIP .240,  FIP 4.59, xFIP 5.02....  6.9 K/9 at a time when the K rate is rising everywhere in MLB.

To be honest I didn’t notice the salary.  My bad.  But maybe (as others have now said) SF would eat money or take Cozart?

Frankly I am not a huge fan of this exact pitcher but if the Angels could land some premium arms I could see how this guy could deliver solid value in the back half of the rotation.

But yes I missed the salary.  That’s way too much.

Wheeler or Odorizzi are much better and won't cost 20 mil per year

Yup - the only way Samardzija is worth it in any way is if San Fran just wants to save $7m and does a one for one for Cozart, maybe with a throwaway prospect or lotto ticket guy like Ward or Rojas who might not stick here.

And that’s still not great for the Halos, but I wouldn’t necessarily be opposed to it. You’re essentially signing him to a 1/$7m deal, quickly tying up one of our likely 3 SP needs, and removing Cozart from any potential infield playing time and taking him completely out of the equation, clearing the path even more for youngsters or opening a spot on the 25/40 for someone like Kendrick, Zobrist, Thaiss, etc.
