Religion and Politics

Not surprising: The Christian church's unhealthy relationship with right-wing politics is driving people away from religion altogether. As an evangelical who holds more-progressive political views, I can totally understand why people would be turned off by the Trump slobberfest that's been happening in the evangelical church.

How did Christian values ever become synonymous with Republican values? I do believe that Jesus would be passionate about protecting the lives of the unborn. I don't see him getting too worked up about the right to own firearms, building walls, or deregulating corporations. It's fine if you believe in those things, but just admit they have nothing to do with Christianity.

I'm not saying that the Dems' platform is synonymous with Christianity, either. I wish Christians could go back in time and decide that they're not going to hitch themselves to either political party. Billy Graham was approached by both parties to run for president, but he declined, because he knew politics were and are divisive. His focus was on spreading the gospel, not fighting a culture war.

Totally agree with your post here. Religion mixing with politics is stupid. To answer your question, I think Roe v Wade is where the evangelicals and Republicans started to become synonymous. As for Christ and his teachings, he is speaking directly to us and how we should behave and treat our fellow man. He doesn't speak to how governments should run themselves. I always see this meme that claims Jesus was a socialist because of his views on the poor and those less fortunate. I think we as individuals should follow with that mentality in our personal lives. Jesus spoke frequently about charity and giving but it is stupid to compare Jesus to government.

I tend to agree. The only thing Jesus said about government in Scripture was, essentially, pay your taxes. (Wait, maybe he is a socialist!)

i think you nailed it on personal service vs. aligning with a party.

and i don't like the "Jesus was a socialist" meme either.

To be fair, I've encountered far more people who think Jesus aligns with Republican values than people who call Jesus a socialist.

Black churches are completely aligned with the Democratic Party.

i think everyone should be political, including Christians.  Problem is we have stopped thinking for ourselves.  We look to the government to solve all our problems.

we have a mandate to teach our kids, we have handed them over to our schools and churches to do that for us.  We see mandates to protect the helpless, we ask the government to do it for us.  We have a mandate to help the poor, the orphans and widows, we ask the government to do it for us.

As Keith Green put it, we are asleep in the light.

i think the dems have sold themselves to blacks mostly on social justice issues. i don't think dems are helping blacks very much at all these days (and neither are cons). maybe someone else can say it better than i can, but i think it goes far more to power for the party than it does as justice for the common man.

And reps have done nothing for Christians

While this is true, there is also a historical and cultural reason for this that I can't possibly understand. I can scrutinize and critique white evangelicals, since I am one.
