If true, this will be interesting.  The biggest mystery to cryptocurrency has always been who created it.

Yeah.  I think more of a PR stunt for whatever his new cryptocurrency thing is.  Although I will say that his losing all those bitcoin is probably the most logical explanation as to why it hasn't been cashed.

I'm not super familiar with the history. Has it been known that Satoshi had/has close to a million bitcoins that he's never cashed?

Yeah, that's the rumor.  I think most of the skeptics are waiting for him to produce the bitcoin to prove himself.
