Angels, city start lease negotiations

Recommended Posts

Before people gloss over this snippet, and suggests moves of grandeur to Long Beach, Los Angeles, and other parts:

The store has closed anyway, in Anaheim and just about anywhere else in Southern California that Moreno might have wished to move. Times are too tight and budgets too lean for cities to pay for stadiums and arenas.

They are going to move to Irvine. Arte will cut a deal where he and the city will convert part of the Great Park into a stadium. Revenues that will go to the city from parking, ticket sales and development will help pay for the mess that is the Great Park.

Irvine has already cut the park's budget in half and now charges $10 for a balloon tide and $2 for each ride a kid takes on carousel.

Reteegz will drive by the stadium and curse it and himself everytime he drives to a Padre game.

I can't say that I'd support another ball park renovation.  If Anaheim wants to keep the Angels in that city, I say they build a new stadium.  Otherwise, I'm guessing Los Angeles, which has spectacular plans already drawn up for a downtown football complex could possibly play home to the Angels, who already share their name.

The Angels have needed a new stadium for at least 10 years now.  The idea of keeping the same one for another 25 years would be horrible.

It took 10 years to approve the NFL stadium, and that was with $0 public money.  Angels will be in the same position.  No public money will be given by LA.  And if that's the case, it only makes sense for the Angels to stay where they are, and cut a deal with the city so that they could use the 155 acres of prime property for free.

A problem I see with a renovation is the time it will take. All work will have to be done in 5 short months in the offseason. They could just break it up over a few seasons or move the team to Anteater park for a season. As of now, it looks like that park could hold all the fans have already have been showing up.
