CLEVELAND — The losses continue to mount for an Angels team that seemed primed to get itself back in the race just a couple weeks ago.

Hours after placing three more players on the injured list, the Angels lost 6-2 to the Cleveland Indians on Sunday afternoon, getting swept for the first time since May. Cleveland right-hander Shane Bieber, a product of Laguna Hills High, pitched a complete game, striking out eight and allowing five hits.

The Angels have lost eight of their last 10 games, dropping below .500 at 56-57, and falling nine games behind the Tampa Bay Rays for the second wild card playoff berth in the AL.

After the Angels swept the Dodgers July 23-24, they were five games over .500 and four games back.

Ravaged by injuries for most of the season, the Angels earlier Sunday lost Félix Peña for the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament, and they also put Griffin Canning (elbow inflammation) and Andrelton Simmons (sprained ankle, bone bruise) on the injured list.

Luke Bard, who had just been promoted earlier in the day because of the pitching injuries, was then hit in the right arm by a 102.8 mph line drive off the bat of Carlos Santana in the fifth. Bard came out of the game and was diagnosed with a tricep contusion.

Bard had entered in the fourth after Jaime Barría’s start ended with three runs on the board for the Indians.

Barría allowed solo homers to Oscar Mercado, Francisco Lindor and Jason Kipnis.

After Bard left, JC Ramírez entered and allowed a two-run single to Kipnis with two outs in the fifth, putting the Angels down 5-1.

It was too deep of a hole for an Angels offense that struggled all weekend against Cleveland’s pitching staff, which is came into the game with the third best ERA in the league.

The Angels scored seven runs in the three games.

On Sunday Bieber — the All-Star Game MVP — held them to just an Albert Pujols RBI single and Kole Calhoun’s 25th homer. They had five hits.

More to come on this story.
