Lasted quite a while here in Long Beach.

4.0 in Ridgecrest. Felt like a slow roller in Newport. Lasted a while too.

Interestingly, according to my app.  There was a series of prequakes in the area about 30 minutes before the 6+ hit.

One source I've seen has this 4.0 as a second quake or aftershock of the first one. Happened two minutes later. There's no way what I felt was only a 4.0. Lasted about a minute.

6.4 at the epicenter. Not sure what it was when it came to HB. I don't remember the last time an earthquake lasted that long.

I was in the shower.  So I thought I was having a seizure or something.  I'm glad it was just a rocking and not a jolt because I probably would have slipped and broken something.

Yes, very good it was just a rolling one. I happened to be sitting down on my laptop so I felt the whole thing. I wonder if all those people out on their bikes for the July 4th stuff felt it.

Been in southern California for 47 years now, and once again I have learned the name of a community I never heard of before, Searles Valley.

How many cities, towns, communities, etc do we have here, several hundred? A thousand?

It was rolling for a while at home in San Dimas. I got up from my chair in the office to make sure it didn't get stronger and have to hold up my monitor that I never lashed down with the earthquake strap. Probably should do that today.

Lucy the Earthquake Lady is briefing the media at Cal Tech. She reminded us that this has been a very quiet time for quakes. The 6.4 today is the biggest one in southern California since 1999. In the previous decade before that there were about eight magnitude 6's.

shaking up here in the mountains wasn't too bad but went on for a good 20-30 seconds.  have a cantilevered cupboard in the kitchen that is a perfect seismograph, so even if you can't feel it you can hear it.  crazy that was a 6.6 125 miles away, puts into perspective what the expected 7.8 on the san andreas would feel like considering it cuts through about 5 miles away at the bottom of this mountain.

Few things here.

First. Its not official until Lucy talks. Second, its not official until we see pool water splashing videos. And callers saying "it felt like a rolling motion, chuck".

But yeah. I tell my younger guys at work that were super overdue all the time. We had a good run of 6+ quakes in the late 80s, into the 90s... then nothing. Meanwhile the rest of the ring of fire has been getting nailed badly the last ten years...

This was a good thing today. It happened in the middle of nowhere. But we need them to happen... so it was best case scenario.

The tricky part is where did it add stress to?....

Wow, authorities in Ridgecrest have just announced they're expecting another significant aftershock there sometime in the next 15 minutes. They've already had many, including two of 4.6.

I wasn't aware the prediction science was so far along.
