Frieri DONE as closer!

Recommended Posts

I think a 90% save rate has been getting it done.  Nice cherry-picking of stats.

That said, Scioscia was right to pull him out and I understand the questioning of him.  But bitching about Scioscia saying that, after Scioscia made the right call by removing him, is just looking for something to bitch about.

+1.  Scioscia has to keep his confidence up, he is all he's got right now.  Next time Jerry needs to fix the pen properly.

K-Rod was an adventure sometimes, but never that wild to walk 7 per 9 innings for a 2 month span.

That is Mitch Williams in his declining days wild.

Plus Frieri is increasingly getting behind in the count even when not walking batters.

That was brought up tonight, that he did not throw a first pitch strike to any hitter he faced in the ninth. Even though it's only 1-0, if you are spending every at-bat playing catch-up, the hitter can lay off anything  but a hittable pitch knowing that you have to come in with a strike. That leads to a lot of pitches being thrown and the more pitches, the greater the chance for a mistake. Throwing pitches just out of the strike zone doesn't work very well with a 2-0 count, but if it's 0-2 the hitter has to protect the plate. You're just a lot more successful when you're throwing strikes.

When is Butcher going to make the necessary adjustments?

I know, let's trade him and watch a real pitching coach make a few minor changes or just tell him to forget all the adjustments and just pitch. Just like what happened to Fernando Rodney who is now dominating as he did last year.

Two tough outings in a row (one a 4 outsave) and prior to that he had 7 strong outings in a row including a 4 out save and 2 5 out saves.

Folks need to get a friggen grip.

(and good call with Scioscia pulling him when he did)

I agree 100%.

Rodney has hit a major rough spot this month. In May he has 2 losses and 3 blown saves and a 6.30 ERA. 10 walks in 10 innings

Saw that. Not sure if the 48 saves from last year was an anomaly or that this is the real Rodney.

You might want to look at Rodney's numbers again

Sorry for the confusion.

I actually did mean to say "FINISHED as permanent closer".   Unfortunately, the new board doesn't allow the thread title to be edited once it's created.

It's fine to give him say 1/3 of the save opps for now.   But I wouldn't go beyond that.

His stats are indicative of being one of the 3-4 best relievers in the pen.   He just isn't the best one, not with those control issues.  We simply do not have ANY current reliever capable of being a solid permanent closer.

Frieri relys too much on fastball, fastball, fastball....and now he has lost control of it.  His fastball would be great if he can control and get some secondary pitches worked out.

What happened to the pitches he was working on in spring training and had supposedly added to his arsenal?

Wait a minute... you people want to drop Frieri from the closers role and put in someone else from one of the leagues worst bullpens instead? Really?

Really?

I agree. Frieri has an unpredicatble, nasty fastball. That's about it. When he's on, he's on, and like many others in the pen, when he's not, its a disaster. It's the same leave em in too long, take em out too soon song and dance. Unfortunately, without proper management, you pay the price with a closer like Frieri.

Let him close, just shorten his leash.
