Tanana should have won 20 in 1976.

He won 19 games, but had a memorable 9th inning hiccup in old Skankee Stadium in the summetime that may have ultimately denied him the one chance in his career to win 20 games.

 

Halos led 8-0 going to the bottom of the 9th inning.   Skankees scored a few runs, and then Tanana was taken out and the Skankees ultimately tied the game.

The Halos won it in extra innings, but no 20 wins for Tanana may have resulted.

Yep, back then the Arson Squad I was out in full force with the likes of the legendary Dick Selma, Dave Sells, etc.

 

What's remarkable is that even though Tanana never had great stuff after his 4th regular season in 1977 (from 1975-1977, 8 Ks/9 innings but also nearly 800 innings total including 19 straight CGs at one point), he still persevered for 20 seasons overall and won 240 games.

19 straight complete games . . . that's just insane. teams don't even get that many in one season from their entire staff.

Tanana pitched like a man. Pitch counts weren't necessary when he pitched.

It's just a shame that they went beyond what may have been his true pitch limit with the 19 straight CGs, because it was Ryan, Tanana, and 2 days of cryin back in those days.

Frank was a warrior.  One of my favorite Angels of all time.

 

I felt way more confident with him starting than I ever did Nolan.

Gary Nolan was a hell of pitcher for most of he career, but by the time we got him, he was beyond shot.
