Tumblr: Can someone esplain me what it does?

With this tumblr purchase by yahoo, I thought I'd check out the site itself and see what the fuss is about.

 

Long story short:  I don't get it.

 

It looks like a place for busy work for people who hang out with their laptops in coffee shops all the days.

 

Can someone please let me know what it's all about?  I'm serious.

I think Marissa Mayer bought it just so she can make a splash in front of her investors. It seems to me that this site is just another flash in the pan hipster internet gathering site and it will be dead before Yahoo even has a chance to figure out how to monetize it. Props to David Karp for selling at the peak of his site's value.

 

Minute 5:25 of this interview cracked me up when I saw it on Tuesday. Look at Karp's reaction to the question! He knows the reporter is right but doesn't want to throw it in Mayer's face while she struggles to answer the question for him with some high quality BS.

It's really good for amateur porn. Besides that, I'm not really sure. College kids who think they're smart and artsy post stupid stuff. So yeah, other than the girls who post pics of their nether regions, not really sure what purpose it serves. Good for the guy who got rich though.

Alrighty then...I've spent some time digging around tumblr.  Bottom line:  I thought I was a bit off at times but holy feces!  There's some whack jobs out there. 

 

It's a great place to sort of travel the world without the sheen of travel guides or brochures.  I like the photos I've seen of foreign lands from alternative and local perspectives.  That's cool.

 

Another plus, there's some serious Miami Vice screen shots out there.  I've barely scratched the surface but there's some legit action there.

 

Is tumblr what the 'hashtag' (#) is used for when I see it referred to on other sites or whatever?  As in "#miami vice?

but the most popular pages are animated gifs of porn.

 

its hugely popular with high schoolers and teen agers.

 

there is nothing technologically interesting whatsoever. its just a website.

so zero barrier to entry.

and no business model (they lost about $20m a year).

 

yahoo is buying access to hundreds of millions of teenage eyeballs, so they can put ads in front of them.

Thanks for the synopsis.  The site is custom made for accomplishing two things particular to the younger American:  bringing attention to one's self and showing images of things wanted but not needed.

 

After 24 hours in tumblr land, I'm going on board as saying I like it.  I've discovered some pretty cool music I'd never have heard and I also found a nice little story about some chick's dad spotting Phillip Michael Thomas at a restaurant in Orlando.  He signed an autograph accompanied by a poem he wrote on the spot.  Class.
