General NHL Talk 2019-2020

Not really sure what is up with the Golden Knights. They have lost four straight, they are at dead even .500, and they have not won more than two consecutive games all season. Defense seems to be a problem, and they don't seem as quick as they were a year ago - this despite local media claims before the season that this is probably the best team that they have ever put on the ice. They give up a lot of odd man rushes, and they are far from invincible at home, which was a big edge for the first two seasons. They will sometimes outshoot the opposition almost 2-1 and still be trailing by two goals. They usually drill San Jose here, and they lost in OT the last time that the Sharks were here, scoring only one goal. Hopefully Gallant will figure something out. The personnel is not that much different from a year ago, although they did have to trade a couple of pieces due to salary concerns.

Thoughts on the big two.  Now that we are past the 1/3 point in the season?  They definitely don't seem to be the next McDavid.  Not even Hischier.  Like they will be solid players, but not franchise type players.

  • McDavid 2015 48 pts (45 games)
  • Eichel 2015 56 pts
  • Matthews 2016 69 pts
  • Laine 2016 64 pts
  • Hischier 2017 52 pts
  • Hughes 2019 12 points (36?)
  • Kakko 2019 14 points (42?)

Hughes is on a terrible team and Kakko is watching Panarin get all the chances but yeah, they're not on that level just yet. Kirby Dach has 10 pts so far as well

2 overall #1's in the last 3 years, and Hall.  And they are still in the cellar.  That's quite an accomplishment by the Devils.

The bottom of the Western Conference standings give new meaning to the word "Calolifornia"

Yeah, it's pretty embarrassing.  Ducks are already making excuses about it being a process.  But the facts are, the young kids just aren't cutting it, and seem to have been vastly overrated.  Right now the leader is Steel with 11 points in 32 games.  That's about a 28 point pace.  The young players seem to be future 3/4's than 1/2's that the Ducks need.

I guess this is what happens when you never get a pick early in the draft

I know that no one else is shedding any tears, but the injuries for my Penguins this year are bordering on unbelievable.

The one to Jake Guentzel is heartbreaking.   Named an all star for the first time, scores goal 20 of the season, which is career point 200.  On the play, trips on dman, awkward into boards, wrecked shoulder, out for the year.

yeah, that was tough to watch. he's played very well and been one of those keeping the pens in contention during syd's absence. he's out 4-6 months, so he's done for the regular season but might be able to return for the playoffs depending on how far the pens go.

A few random observations as we head to the all star break

Boston already has 12 OT losses including 0-7 in shoot outs

Panthers lead the league in goals. If their 2 time Vezina winner ever starts playing like one they'll be dangerous

Is San Jose really going to stand pat? They should be trading anything they can

Watching Ovechkin is like watching Shaq in his day. There's just nobody who can physically handle him one-on-one

After nearly 2 decades of mediocrity it's finally fun to be an Avalanche fan again

Fixed that for you.

Also something to consider.  Expansion draft in 2021.  While people who debuted this year and next are exempt.  All other players are open game.  Also looking at the Ducks, Manson, Fowler, Henrique and Silfverberg have modified NTC and thankfully this time no NMC (fuck you Bieska) to have to deal with.

I mentioned San Jose specifically because they have a ton of old farts on long term contracts. Karlsson is probably unmovable and maybe Hertl and Meier are worth keeping around but everybody else should be on the table. Burns, Couture, Vlasic, Kane....

Looking at their contracts.  LOL.

34 year old Brett Burns (Who is a stud and wouldn't mind on the Ducks for a year or two) after this season will have 5 years remaining at $8 million.  With a NTC.

29 year old Karlsson will have 7 years remaining at $11.5 million.  And has a NMC.

32 year old Vlasic will have 5 years at $7 million.  And a NMC.

30 year old Colture will have 7 years at $8 million with a NTC.

At least Kane and Meier and Hertl are paid through their prime, and not their retirement years.
