For the AW forum poker players

I know some of you are avid poker players. I consider myself an avid very small stakes/bar poker player. I would love a thread about all things poker-related (like, how many of you plan to play WSOP events, etc). I play a lot in a local bar league (yes, it's free, and yes, there are a lot of bad plays and bad players).

I would love to pick the brains of those who play semi-regularly, both in tourneys and cash games because I do want to get better.

I don't want to make this just about bad beat stories (but if you got 'em, let's hear 'em), but I wanted to post this *interesting* hand that I had over the weekend.

Blinds 400/800

I raise UTG to 2k.

4 calls, including button.

My hand:

Card-backCard-back

Flop:

Card-backCard-backCard-back

I bet 4k, everybody folds to button, who raises to 12.3k.

I reraise to 30k (which puts him all in). He thinks about it for about 2 minutes and makes a crying call.

His hand:

Card-backCard-back

Turn:

Card-back

River:

Card-back

I know I'm supposed to take solace in getting the villain to call off all his chips drawing nearly dead (and also for confusing him as to what my actual holding was), but I just seem to get run down a lot (although this is probably the worst occasion I can remember).

Anyway, I was down to less than 10k after this hand, and got the remaining 7700 in on the last hand at 400/800 with AQ off and got called by A7 suited & A5 suited. Seven on the flop, GG me.

However, this particular bar league does give "tokens" to the top 3 finishers in every tournament, and these tokens allow you to play in an online Sunday morning tournament where the top 4% get a buy in to an "exclusive" tournament in Vegas (summer) or Atlantic City (fall). So I'll be in Vegas the second week of June playing in this thing. It should have an estimated $300k prize pool. Anyone else gonna be there around that time?

I don't think the guys that I knew from here that played regularly post much anymore. I myself don't play as much anymore and instead have done more backing of players and pros I know then actually playing. I'd recommend 2+2 for poker strategy opposed to here.

I'm still good friends with Derek who plays full time in Vegas. I've bought some of his action over the years and him and his friends have a nifty poker group on Facebook that's private, but a good source for poker knowledge. If you're on there I can possibly introduce you, but I'm not even really active on there and mainly just buy people's action when they post what they are playing on occasion.

As for your hand above, nothing wrong with how it was played....but I think you know that and are just telling a bad beat story. Your hand was a dream scenario and the math dictates that you stack that player almost every time. I don't see anything wrong with your sizing either....although, I may make it a tad bit smaller on your open, but 2k is fine. On that flop I can't wait to get it in which is what happened.

Good idea for a thread topic, but I doubt this gets any traction. We used to have a poker thread many years ago (maybe 10) on the old forum that just died and now we are all 10 years older with families or significant others that don't play as much or post much anymore. Even the high buy-in country club game I used to play got broken up once people started having kids or getting too old.

Good luck with your tournament.

I was in a "Go Fish" tournament.  I asked a guy if he had any 3's and I didn't even have any in my hand.  He was blown away when he found out later.  Told me it was the boldest game of fish he had ever seen.  I took all his queens and sevens and never looked back.

I still like to play poker. I usually play 4-6 times a year. I used to work at Morongo in Cash Ops and due to that I couldn't play any poker/21/slots. Only could play in the once year employee tournament.

I did go up to the WSOP in 2007 to play in the Casino Employee WSOP Tournament.

Now that my son is "legal" to play poker, we are going to make a few trips to see what we can do1
