OAKLAND — Four games into the season, the Angels are still waiting for their bats to arrive.

The Angels lost 2-1 to the Oakland A’s on Sunday afternoon, dropping their third game in the series, mostly because of a sluggish offense.

The Angels scored nine runs in the four games, and six of them came in a two-inning span in their victory on Friday night. For most of the weekend, they strung together a line of zeroes.

Against A’s starters, the Angels scored just one run in 24 innings, none until Kole Calhoun’s homer against Frankie Montas in the sixth inning on Sunday. That was also the Angels’ first homer of the young season.

Calhoun led off the game with a double and then Mike Trout was hit by a pitch, but that potential rally was snuffed when Justin Bour hit into a double play.

In the seventh, Bour led off with a double, putting the tying run in scoring position with no outs. Andrelton Simmons grounded out to shortstop, Zack Cozart fouled out and Tommy La Stella struck out, ending the inning.

The anemic offense left no margin for error for Tyler Skaggs, whose first start was shorter than he’d like but encouraging.

Skaggs missed a start in spring training because of forearm fatigue, so he did not get the full workload a pitcher would have going into the season.

Skaggs came out after his 86th pitch, which Marcus Semien pulled for a two-out double in the fifth.

Ty Buttrey then entered and gave up a bloop single to Matt Chapman, bringing in the A’s second run of the game.

Skaggs could have made it deeper into the game if he hadn’t needed 33 pitches to get through the third inning. After he’d retired the first eight hitters of the game, he gave up two singles and a walk to load the bases. He got out of the jam by getting Stephen Piscotty on a flyout.

In the fourth, Skaggs gave up a homer to Khris Davis, his third in the four-game series.

More to come on this story.
