OC Register: Angels rally comes up short in loss to A’s

Recommended Posts

OAKLAND — The Angels’ hitters woke up a little too late on Saturday night.

After getting shut out for seven innings, the Angels mounted a rally that came up short in their 4-2 loss to the Oakland A’s.

The Angels had not scored in the first seven innings, and they had not even had a runner in scoring position after the third.

No. 9 hitter David Fletcher led off the eighth with a grounder to second, but Jurrickson Profar made an errant throw and Fletcher was safe. Zack Cozart then blasted a ball off the top of the left field fence, for a double, sending Fletcher to third.

Mike Trout hit a fly ball to deep right, driving in Fletcher and sending Cozart to third. Andrelton Simmons then singled into left, bringing in Cozart and cutting the deficit to 4-2.

The A’s then summoned All-Star closer Blake Treinen to try to secure a five-out save, and Albert Pujols greeted him with a single into left, sending Simmons to third.

Treinen painted the outside corner to get Justin Bour looking at a third strike, and got Jonathan Lucroy on a popup, ending the inning.

In the ninth, the Angels went down quietly, the disappointing ending to a game that began with such promise.

Felix Peña dominated the A’s lineup early, and the Angels had ample opportunities against Brett Anderson.

Cozart led off the game with a walk, but the next three hitters couldn’t get him home. In the second, the Angels got their first two hitters on, but failed to score. And in the third, Trout lashed a one-out double, but the Angels couldn’t get him home either.

Meanwhile, Peña whipped through the first eight Oakland hitters, striking out three of them.

In the bottom of the third, though, with two outs, Peña gave up a bloop single to No. 9 hitter Josh Phegley. Robbie Grossman then yanked a clean single into right. Peña plunked Matt Chapman with a pitch to load the bases.

Stephen Piscotty then took a fastball over the outside corner and poked it up the middle for a two-run single.

An inning later, Peña issued a leadoff walk to Kendrys Morales and then he threw a fastball over the middle of the plate to Mark Canha, who pumped it over the fence for a two-run homer, flipping his bat as he left the box.

That was all for Peña, but the Angels bullpen continued it’s strong early-season work to keep them in the game.

Relievers Noé Ramírez, Justin Anderson and Luis Garcia shut out the A’s. The Angels relievers haven’t allowed a run in 9-1/3 innings so far.

More to come on this story.
