OC Register: Angels blanked in Opening Day loss to A’s

OAKLAND — The Angels opened their season quietly Thursday afternoon.

Mustering only three hits, the Angels began the 2019 season with a 4-0 loss to the Oakland A’s, the sixth year in a row they have lost their first game.

It was the fourth time in Angels history that they were shut out on Opening Day, although optimistic fans could take some solace in the fact that one of those was their World Series season in 2002.

Oakland veteran Mike Fiers did not allow a hit until Tommy La Stella’s double to lead off the fifth. Jonathan Lucroy followed with a walk, giving the Angels a promising rally. Peter Bourjos had his smash to third gobbled up by Gold Glove third baseman Matt Chapman, who started a double play.

The Angels were already down 3-0 at the time, thanks to Trevor Cahill’s disappointing debut in the Angels uniform.

Cahill, signed as a free agent after pitching for the A’s last year, gave up four runs in six innings. He allowed homers to Khris Davis and Marcus Semien. Semien has hit 14 of his 76 career homers against the Angels.
