OC Register: Angels, lefty Sam Freeman agree to minor league deal

Recommended Posts

The Angels have agreed to terms with lefty Sam Freeman on a minor-league deal, giving them another hard-throwing option for their bullpen.

Although the Angels may not add Freeman to the major league roster in time for Thursday’s opener, he is likely to be up soon, given his experience and peripheral numbers.

Freeman, 31, has a 3.61 ERA in parts of seven seasons, including the last two with the Atlanta Braves, who released him last week. Freeman had a 4.29 ERA in 50 1/3 innings last year with the Braves.

His other numbers, however, fit the profile of the type of pitcher the Angels tend to acquire. His average fastball was 95.6 mph last year. Angels relievers Ty Buttrey, Hansel Robles, Luis Garcia and Hansel Robles all throw in the upper 90s.

Freeman also tends to keep the ball in the park and on the ground. Last year, he struck out 10.4 batters per nine innings, a career high.

Although Freeman could provide a lefty to a bullpen currently without one, he isn’t a traditional lefty. Freeman has been more effective against righties than lefties throughout his career.

The Angels will need to make a 40-man roster move before they can add Freeman. Their roster is currently full, and they still may need to create another spot to add another outfielder. Justin Upton’s injury pushes Peter Bourjos into the starting lineup, and they have no other healthy outfielders on their 40-man roster.
